Generally speaking , Ferraris and Porsches from the 90s are a lot cheaper in Malaysia . This is due to the idealogy there , where by these cars are not treasured because they are considered old , dont have power steering and super aircon . Added to that service is quadruple the price of a Toyota, and replacement parts need to come from Eurospares or similar , and get a 300 % tax at customs

None the less , they are still Euro spec cars , from the same factory in Italy , that mostly have low milage due to the fact they were bought back in the 90s as a sign of prestige , and never driven because they were not as easy to drive as a 450 sel merc , and got shuffled to back of the very large garage in a very rich persons house .

Just as all the US muscle cars have flooded the market here in recent years ( who would have thought 15 years ago they would allow LHD cars to be so easily registered nationwide), at a fraction of the cost they used to pre 2000 , there are endless deceased estates , ex royal family cars , and "barnfinds" in malaysia for Ferraris . Obviously these cars arnt advertised plain as day on shifty car dealer sites , a lot of looking has to be done.

Given the obviously ridiculous prices being asked for the very high milage 328s on sale here with bone head personal plates , id say looking for a pre 89 car in a country just a few hours away is an option for would be 308/328 and gt4 buyers in Australia , just the same way the nissan gtr was much more affordable as personal import.

It's just not that straight forward here.

    You're applying too much logic!

Hong Kong Singapore Thailand are all around the 100% mark; not sure about Philippines and Taiwan; very surprised Vietnam does not have this kind of tax. Partly a congestion tax, partly a luxury car tax. In Singapore you can't even buy a car unless you have proof of a permanent parking place.

PS I lived in HK big chunks of my life. For instance a car sold back to HK that had its first registration tax paid when new, would pay nothing (for this particular tax); an identical car coming to HK without this tax having been paid earlier would be taxed 100%. And the same car coming in to Australia would have a whole different tax situation. So where the car is going to can make a big difference on how the price appears to the purchaser.

In 2014 Australia got just about every Lamborghini sold new in Singapore in 2004 so they could get their car purchase permit back ( not sure what it's actually called).
Lots of 2004 Gallardo and some Murci's. Some one made a motza.

    It's not that simple.

You have to factor in the LCT, GST and duty when bringing in a car to Australia, your 135K car would cost an Australian buyer around $200K landed here , ( but as mentioned previously, your post '89 car would not be eligible for registration until next year when the laws change, -probably).
If you qualified under the personal import scheme as migrating to Australia you could have avoided all the LCT/GST/Duty expenses and compliance hassles and sold it once it was in Australia.

There are a range of factors that determine if its worth importing a car to Australia; those being the purchase price overseas, exchange rate, applicable taxes and technical requirements and finally what you could buy a similar car for already in Australia

During 2009-2012 post GFC prices in overseas RHD markets where depressed and the Australian currency was strong against the pound, so it was worthwhile to import cars ( Ferrari's) from the UK and Asia, and hundreds of cars arrived here.
After 2013 the market overseas returned to normal and used car prices in the UK particularly rose dramatically and the Australian currency fell, so it was no longer worthwhile to import Ferrari's to Australia, you can buy a car here for less than it would cost to import.
In fact the market for some models has been so strong overseas that quite a number of valuable Aussie cars have been exported, (never to return because of the taxes).

In Australia we are generally isolated from downward market pressures due to import product substitution because of the impact of our taxes on the landed price. Prices would have to collapse overseas AND our currency would have to be much stronger for those conditions to re-occur ( as was the case in 2009-2012).

Not worth shopping there then ! Malaysia doesnt have any such fees . No stamp duties on sales , no transfer fees more than few hundred dollars .

i have lived in singapore , buying a car ther even as a local is barely affordable . first u buy the car , then u buy a certificate to own it for ten years , which is the same price of the car .

i wish a personal import avoided LGT/GST and duty , but it certainly does not . Person imports certainly do get those fees. Totally.
