No I think the car has some proportion problems. The doors are pretty cool but I wonder what life is like under the glass in the roof all the time in hot climates. The side barge boards though are the most controversial styling issue that I think are 1) unattractive and 2) completely unnecessary. Lastly, the rear is attractive BUT we've already seen exactly this 2 other times with the P1 and 570s.
Well there you go...side boards are what I love the most. Just so technical and cool to me. Supercars are fantasy machines to make you feel like a race driver. Those side boards do just that for me. I think im understanding your point though. Do you like classic designs like original ferrari California or 275, miura or original countach, maybe aston martins like db5 and db9? I get that if my assumptions are correct. I like those cars too, I had xke convt after all, but I want my ssupercars slightly demented and 720 fits that
the front looks too insectoid but other than that it's a nice design my 570GT has the pano roof and i love it even in bright sunlight, coming from a 458 spider i was always sweaty with top down summer driving, now with pano roof i get the same feeling with windows down but much less heat and UV exposure. haven't felt the need to put a screen over the roof yet. i've listened to the sound videos and it has more of a deep rumble and pops and crackles on overrrun, my 570GT doesn't sound as good and doesn't overrrun. i wonder what it sounds like inside because i hear massive turbo whine in my car but it doesn't sound bad, to the female species they all comment it sounds like a spaceship.
my AMG GTS did not sound turbo charged at all... in the 1.5 years of ownership i never heard a turbo whine or wastegate noise. granted it is front engine and the 488 is mid so you can't completely hide it... or be like Mclaren and embrace the turbo noise it really isn't all that bad just different.

Any my response is: I have driven the 720S (I had one for 4 days to do with whatever I want and I put 800 miles and over 18 driving hour on it) and Scraggy is 100% correct. I have also driven 488 and I currently own a 675LT and previously owned a 650S. I also previously owned a 458 Italia and 458 Spider.
Especially in static pictures you can find elements, and angles, of almost any car that are displeasing and make you feel like happy about the car. For example I absolutely hated the "whiskers" on my 458 and the "fish gills" on my 12C but I found both cars overall to be attractive. You really have to be around a car to appreciate it's beauty. Even in a flat color (McLaren Orange) that doesn't flatter the car and with the unattractive carbon fiber hood (too much contrast with the McLaren Orange) I still found this car insanely beautiful and, after 4 days of driving it and getting to appreciate all the beautiful lines it has, I would have bought it if McLaren would have sold it to me.
Disagree. The Glacier White one they showed around the USA prior to launch (and at Amelia Island last weekend) was absolutely, drop-dead, gorgeous.
And is there a point? I'm happy for the 720. I hope it raises the game for everyone--don't know it really will. Waiting for professional drivers to get behind the wheel.
Well you have seen it so you know better than I do how it looks in the flesh I would say it's "exotic" and "interesting" but not "pretty". To me a great car design would be pretty / beautiful in any color. In fact, a car painted in silver is the best way to judge its real appearance. Silver takes the emotion of color out of the equation and shows the true shapes best. If it looks great in silver it will look great in everything. The 458 looks pretty awesome in silver. So does a Dino or 308 or most 60's Ferrari's as well as the 2004 Ford Gt. Those are "pretty" cars. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Look at this foto and tell me it is not nearly identical to 458! Squint and cant tell any difference at all. It is absurd to love a 458 and hate 720. Theyre near twins btw, my wifes fav cookie was hydrox and most hated is oreo yet theyre 99% same. Go figure....
I'll bite. I'm looking at the photo and I don't think they are nearly identical. There are absolutely some similarities common between the mid-engine race layouts. But, I don't think they are identical anymore than the Ferrari F12 and Corvette are identical. I'm fascinated by the 720s design. Every vent and curve screams functional and fast and I think the overall design is much more cohesive than the 640. Part of me loves it. But at least at first glance it doesn't capture my heart like a 458. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I wish someone would post a similar 458 foto to compare. Same roof line, a pillar, c pillar, same curves to wheel arches, etc cannot like one and not the other. They only differ in details whereas 458 and 12c were very different we need side by side pics!
I totally agree! I am not a fan of that flat non-metallic McLaren Orange - especially with the carbon fiber hood. As ugly as it was I still would have bought the car on the spot if McLaren had been willing to sell it (they weren't it's a pre-production prototype) simply because of how well it drives. But I've seen the car in person in two other colors and it completely blew me away. They have a silver-white color called Glacier White and you can really appreciate the lines much better in that color. I've ordered one of the launch editions in Memphis Red with a red and black interior.
Have to agree with MarkNC. Saw the 720 in Geneva and took many photos. Absolutely spectacular car! Orange does it no favors tho in my eyes. White car was something I could see having tho. The car has great presence and feels right in its stance. The interior is very technical... much more so than a Ferrari, even the 812. But tho techy, the interior is much more inviting than any previous McLaren I've sat in. It is a big step improvement! Could see getting one at some point assuming the driving experience matches and it appears to be reliable. I expect it to be a big win for McLaren. I'll try to post some hi rez pics when I download them from my camera... SV
I'm also in the "720 looks great" camp (but not a fan of orange for any car). Not to replace my 458 but if I had the garage space and you were giving me one, I'd take it.
Now I know why I like the Evora 400 design and price. Side by side with 720s. Cars: 2013 Ferrari 458 Spider 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cab Only 2 that I drive.
They are already talking about the 720 LT here and how it will be better than the 720s. Why do this so early? This is why the depreciation on mclaren's will continue. Why not give the 720s a few years to bake in before already talking about the next model? Very powerful McLaren 720S Long Tail (LT) will be going up against the Huracan Performante
... And just after the 720LT they will release a less expensive, but still faaar better 765S. Long before that, nobody will buy Ferrari of course, because they are so bad in comparison.
