    Fair comments.

Its a professional boxer's job to devise a strategy that keeps him safe from the other fighter and not get knocked out, and in that regard, Jacobs succeeded. It's not the fighter's job to fight the way you wish for simply to create an entertaining fight!

Personally, I found the fight interesting, as you have said yourself.

As far as the champion is concerned, it's his job to put away the challenger convincingly (as the GGG fanboys predicted) and in that regard, GGG failed miserably.

That said, I'd easily agree that Jacobs didn't do enough to win convincingly, but neither did GGG, ergo the close & controversial decision.

I would absolutely agree that Jacobs wasn't a particularly formidable opponent, he was simply effective, which makes GGG's performance against an average fighter look even worse!

I certainly won't elevate Jacobs, I think there are far more formidable fighters who can challenge GGG.

    Viva Mexico! :D

The bottom line is, GGG doesn't really live up to all the hype.

    I've still got those free t-shirts :)

Fair enough and well said. A rematch with Jacobs might be in order to clear this up. Unlikely though with Team Golovkin's eye on Saunders and then Canelo.

Same goes for Jacobs, he didn't live up to his hype either. The style of fighting he picked made for a boring fight. I was expecting him to give us a fight like he did against Quillin, hence, it would have made a GREAT fight against GGG.

Good point on the fight-style, although, again, the fighter's job is to fight to self-preserve & win, not to entertain. Only the really great Champions could do both!

That said, Jacobs had no hype to live up to, he was a decided underdog on all fronts, given little chance and disregarded by most, including yourself as you said "Def GGG by stoppage, no more than 8 rds". GGG on the other hand is the undisputed most over-hyped boxer I can think of in recent memory!

I have to partially disagree. Boxing, like anything else, is all about the show and how to bring in the big PPV buys. Boxers have been known to be wise, whether by their personal internal mechanism or by suggestion, to think ahead regarding how they will sell themselves for more interesting fights.

Jacobs' last dozen knockouts in a row were nothing short of impressive. That Jacobs refusal to weigh-in at the fight proved a significant amount of fear as he looked like a light heavyweight fighter next to GGG with easily 15lbs on him. It was a 'meh' of a fight with many saying GGG has been strategically doing all he can to get Canelo to fight, showing some kinks in the armor and not destroying opponents as is normal.

Canelo's rep would be severely diminished if he was knocked out by GGG, and De La Hoya simply would not allow his hottest drawing client to fizzle out minus a massive payday. Canelo draws the biggest number of buys in PPV these days and they simply don't want to give that up, which is precisely what would happen if he were knocked out by GGG. From a business perspective I absolutely don't blame them. Neither can I blame GGG for dumbing down his style (which many are saying he's doing) to get fights.

Make the show look like a solid 'maybe' for both sides with excellent arguments for each competitor and you have yourself a billion $ fight. That's what I am certain they are aiming for with Canelo v GGG.

Apologies John, I didn’t really have time last night to do your post justice with a proper response.

Let me try to do better.

I see where you are coming from, but, your premise simply isn’t plausible or based on any reality.

Do you really think any professional fighter would intentionally jeopardize their PPV standing with an intentionally-crafted sub-par performance?

Especially one as over-hyped as GGG who knows fully that he has a hyped reputation that he is already struggling to live up to!

Let me assure you, when any professional fighter puts on those gloves and climbs through those ropes and into a ring in a prizefight, the only time they are not aiming to win & win impressively is never! I base this on what professional fighters have shared with me.

Think about this for a second, when a professional athlete does not give all, their reputation is damaged. Any fighter stepping into the ring knows that this may be the last time they do so and they are not going to risk a loss over a bigger agenda that may never come to be. The notion you suggest is as ridiculous as the one proffered last year that the winner of the Kentucky Derby would took it easy in the Preakness so as to attract decent competition in the Belmont

In fact, its a reasonable assumption that an athlete who does not give 100% during a performance is perpetrating a fraud upon the betting public, and in certain sports you can be banned for life for this!

I’m afraid we have to face it, the invented notion that GGG is not doing his best is nothing more or less than #GGGfanboy excuses! I’ll say it again, he is a good champion, good, but not great, and the chinks in the armor are real. Sit next to a professional fighter and watch his fights and they'll point out all the weaknesses which are beginning to be exposed.

Meanwhile on a separate subject, I have found my good Sombrero and am sending it off to the cleaners :D

Joe, that's nonsense as it's been done for years to get big name fighters to fight. They simply will not fight if they believe they cannot win. This is not just in boxing. It's all about 'the show', very similar to F1 in that when Lewis Hamilton wins, he just needs to be first and not lap the field. Just win. During races where Lewis started in front he could have built a 60 second lead during most of the races the past couple years, but it was not necessary. GGG won comfortably with a unanimous decision and has opened the door to Canelo agreeing the fight, finally.

Canelo and his management absolutely refused to get in the ring with GGG previously as a KO by GGG would ruin them. At the time, the pay for a fight with GGG just wouldn't do as a final big payday. Since the last 2 fights it has got interesting. Canelo has softened and finally it is likely to happen. If GGG goes down by way of Canelo this argument is out the window and all these fanboys are wrong, but from a business perspective they are spot in. Fake it til you make it. Does it backfire? Of course.

It's all business. Boxing is business. GGG is not going to get Canelo, or anyone of note who has something big to lose, to fight murdering each and every opponent. There is no point to even watching ($$$$) which was the problem with GGG previously, but not now. This is being argued to be crafted to increased PPPV buy activity, isn't everything?

As a side note, my family actually have a tie to world championships and Madison Square Garden as it was my great uncle, Joe Stecher, who was a world champion heavyweight wrestler (before they were fake) in the late teens/early 20s who defended his title at a packed Garden in the first ever video recorded event at the Garden circa 1920 (below).

I see what you are saying overall.

That said, its based on a lot of assumptions, and let’s remember, perception is not always reality!

Meanwhile, within the boxing world, GGG is universally acclaimed as an overrated champion, but maybe that will end up helping him.

In my book, I still say he is the most over-hyped champion I can think of in recent memory, and I felt that way back when he was knocking bums out

Maybe I'm seeing something different, for example, GGG did not win this last fight "comfortably" :D

Anyway, lets see how he fares in the next few fights...

Canelo's actions really spoke volumes about his hesitancy to knock GGG out like some bum as he and De La Hoya are attempting to sell. Their actions speak as a businessman, which is smart. Canelo handed GGG his belt, won't fight in GGG's weight category any longer, and will only fight GGG if GGG sees a pittance compared to Canelo. It really has to be worth it for him gambling on him seeing the floor face down for the first time in his career because if that happens it's over for Golden Boy's 24k Golden Boy. Can't wait to see Canelo's next fight.

This^^^^^^. Canelo clearly ducked Golovkin when he gave up his belt after Cotto. No denying it. Oscar and Golden Boy certainly don't want to lose their cash cow (Canelo) just yet. The notion that Canelo can't fight Golovkin in September if Golovkin fights Saunders in June is ridiculous. Why would that be coming from GBP? They're trying to wiggle out of a fight this year. They're waiting for Golovkin to go on Social Security before he fights Canelo. As we said before styles make fights. Jacobs had a small degree of success against Golovkin, mainly by surviving and not getting knocked out. Golovkin barely broke a sweat beating him and IMO it was a boring fight because of Jacobs "finesse" tactic which was clearly flawed. Golovkin will unify the division after he fights Saunders (if Saunders fights him) and then deal with Canelo (if Canelo and Oscar agree to fight).

And as far as letting opponents hit him Golovkin has done this after he dismisses their power and tries to make it interesting for "the show." His defenses are highly underrated IMO. And there is no one at 160 that will beat him. Period.

    Good stuff.

There are many great theories, plots & predictions being espoused in this thread, all of which are based on assumptions off press propaganda, none of which are based on inside first-hand information, as far as I can see :)

I think I’m the first person in this thread to publicly question GGG’s boxing skills, or suggest that he is overrated & overhyped

That said, I see its everywhere online, and I know a few professional fighters who feel the same way, so its not only me!

I never joined the #GGGfanboys club, right from day one.

As regards your bold predictions, of which I note you are not alone in giving in this thread :D the last time you said “…Golovkin will systematically punish him and either make him quit or knock him out” For GGG's sake, hopefully the next time you’ll be right!

Personally I prefer a wait-and-see approach with the fights upcoming, and I’m not even sure Canelo is the best Mexican fighter standing :)

Its all good, and you just have to have fun with boxing in the current era.

    Another prediction? :)

When I said this thread was full of theories, plots & predictions, I forgot to mention the most frequent offering - excuses. This thread is a treasure-trove of excuses! BTW have you ever noticed how excuses only follow poor performances? :D Seriously, I don't think the reason Kirkland lost was because he was sloppy, but rather because Canelo dominated him.

That said, Canelo is known to be careless himself.

Take Canelo vs Khan for example. His performance was not exactly razor-sharp, but, he was successful in finding a way to score effectively. I draw your attention to what happens at 3:40

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX3U0bwlI-g[/ame]

This reminds me of Pacquiao vs Marquez.

One punch - and it can happen to ANY fighter who climes through those ropes.

In that regard, Canelo can be dominated as FM showed in the fight where the announcer said: "He’s making him look like an amateur". Ray Leonard said to me: "That was a beautiful performance, he took him to boxing school, gave him a lesson”. Here are some great fighters Canelo included being dominated simply by being boxed

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQYeSXpC244[/ame]

A great boxer can neutralize power or brute force as we have seen time & again. Moral of the story, let's wait-and-see what happens upcoming, and whatever happens in the ring usually speaks for itself and is really all that matters.

So right about Floyd schooling Canelo. Mayweather has a way of doing that to most fighters:)

As far as my prediction on a beat down or knock out of Jacobs, it was just my opinion based on Golovkin's history of domination over his opponents. I also think Golovkin has the upmost respect for Jacobs and wanted a competitive fight from him. There was no animosity from either fighter and they put on a good show. Giving props to Jacobs for hanging in there but imho it was an easy win for Golovkin. The only difference was he didn't get the knockout.

Upmost respect for your friend Sugar Ray Leonard, one of the greatest of all time. I'm old enough to have watched him back in the day. Great time for boxing.

I thought Canelo v Mayweather had its close moments. The judges scored it somewhat close with one scoring it a draw. Point being that Canelo wasn't knocked out, nor has he ever been. If anyone could knock him out, Canelo clearly believes GGG could or he wouldn't have handed GGG his belt and left the category. They can talk all the trash they want, but in the end their actions..... It not only destroys Canelo if he is knocked out, but it also further smudges Mayweather as GGG would do something he absolutely failed to do. These are all substantial 'ifs' of course..
