Im a previous 355 spider owner and now a California owner. Mostly because I use it to drive back and forth to work and its very reliable and the hardtop works great.

However, Im considering buying another 355 spider as a strictly weekend car. Something I would keep forver. I loved the 355 since they first came out so i know I wont grow tired of it.

Here is the thing. I hate how the spider looks with the top down.

So if I buy another spider i was considering turning it into a permanent top down roadster. Eliminating the fabric roof completely and having a 575 barchetta style custom rear decklid created.

Has anyone seen anything like this before ? i did a search and count find anything.

yes I know i will destroy the value, but i dont care as I will die with this car.

I have not seen such a mod, but love the idea.

There was a thread here awhile back that was an attempt at a hardtop option for the spider that emulated the berlinetta. If someone can tackle that, surely a properly molded rear boot can be accomplished.

Hope you find something as I will be watching this thread closely.

Exactly. I never liked either the 348 or 355 Spiders. GTS all the way.

Ive never owned a GTS but I did own a Viper RT which is the same basic idea. And while its fun, its not as much fun as full topless.

The problem is I dont think the decklid can be switched out without completely removing the fabric top and mechanicals as the top sticks up too high.

Im okay with completely removing my top, but not sure if you or others would be.

But Im 99% sure Im going to do this. Im retiring in a couple months and it will be a fun late summer project.

So as it progresses Ill post and maybe it can become a group buy for the rear decklid

Retire? Jerry - did your sale go thru? And, I thought you wanted to go back to being an artist?

Regarding this build, it will be very cool and very expensive :)

I cant talk about it quite yet.

By 'retire' I mean i wont have to art for a living. I can art for fun.

I dont think this will be that expensive as i can sell all the parts to the top to cover a lot of the expense. Plus Ill probably sculpt/3d model the decklid myself.

I bet $20k will do it.

Well, $20k is expensive. And if you don't want to talk about your sale, don't bring it up :D :) ;)

    My eyes!! That's horrific. :(

I kind of like the idea, and think it could be done well given enough money.
But yeah, just get a GTS and be done with it.
    Best of both worlds.

I like your photoshop rendition and think it could be well done.

I never liked the Shaq version. The execution reminded me of a 70's dune buggy exercise. The lack of detailing did it in...

The detailing will add cost but will make sure it looks more thought out.

    Looking forward to your build.

Shaqs looks like how NOT to do it, I have thought about this.
A 430 type snap on cover that covers the convertible top might work.
Go for it Jerry, thinking a group buy might be the ticket.

Thinking a PS mockup from the back would determine how good/bad it will look ?
Shaqs just looks "funny" from the back.

Older 911s (996 model) have fabricated hard tops which don't look factory but are decent. Maybe there's a company in the US you can research? Big issue is to ensure integrity especially at high speeds and wind. You don't want these flying off to those behind.
