Owning an F12 out of warranty

I keep one who had the factory initial 3 years warranty expired last March but I have a two warranty extension. The W.E. it's compulsory if you want to have peace of mind.

I have had no issues with '16 but I would add the extension as Mario suggests...peace of mind. If u had a big(ish) issue you would be spending a ton. They're extremely well made, as you know, but sh&t happens.

 

Go for the 2 year extended then self-insure your repairs after that expires. 5 years of full warranty.

 

Highly depends on your use model and your risk acceptance level.

I believe your prior posts brought up depreciation. If you are going to flip, then do it now or else afterwards you'll need some sort of warrantee or you will not distinguish yourself from similar units on the market which would impact value on the sale. If its a keeper then it comes down to two factors IMO. If you drive very little (total garage queen) or drive a whole lot (DD with lots of stop/go) then get the warrantee extension as both situations seem to have higher chance of required repair but for different reasons. However, if you drive enough each month to keep it from sitting - say once a week for at least a half hour mixed with some other longer mixed driving (maybe 1,500 miles/year) then it will have less risk of failure. This is all, of course, generally speaking and anyone could get hit with something expensive out of the blue as was said stuff happens. But I believe the F12 is as a reliable supercar as they come.

I'm sure you know that there are two level of warrantee after the initial three years and all I will say about that is leaks and seals are not covered on the cheaper insurance so waste of time IMO. There have been some exceptions but the full warrantee extension is peace of mind for the cost variance between the two IMO.

For what its worth, mines' a keeper and has full two year warrantee extension and is driven enough to weed out infant mortality (I hope) but still is a bit of a queen - especially cold and wet months. As my wife said about our first child oh so many years ago, "she's my kid and I'll spoil her if I want too". Whole nother story. Dumping another $16K so soon after the original purchase also seems to amuse the dealer enough to at least remember your name. Especially when it very likely is all profit in my case.

So, I will ask you, are you going to insure it?

 

Mine comes up this August, I'm biting the bullet and shelling out the 14k for extending it....god knows, one or two major issues over the next couple of years could cost me well more than warranty extension

 

I happen to know the virtues of a warranty extension because I had a transmission issue with a Cali which happened to have a faulty gear-box sensor. The DCT was removed and put back twice and three months later when the issue was completely resolved the estimated bill had already passed 8000 €. Fortunately I had the warranty extension and that's a lesson I've learned since of never living without one.

I always wondered...is it a fixed price or can we negotiate the additional two years? Dunno why i have the impression that you can haggle a bit.

 

Fixed price . The F12 warranty extension is a good step up in cost from the 2 year 458 warranty extension I did last fall...basically $10k.

 

Why not continue to extend as there are lesser levels of warranty like powertrain etc....? How to self insure the repairs ?

There is a lot not covered after the initial 2 year extended warranty has expired. In my opinion, it's pure profit for Ferrari. The money you save...$15k per year or whatever it is adds up. If no problems after 3 years, your up $45k and can more than afford a major repair should one happen and still be ahead. It all comes down to individual risk tolerance as others have said. I feel that after 5 years of full warranty and experiencing no warranty issue(s), I'm good to go for many trouble free years of ownership after that....no need to throw warranty money away to Ferrari.

 

+1. IMO, I would go for self-insurance by setting the money aside.

 

Agree with others - forget the warranty and self insure.

Plus $15K is insane - why $5K more than 458?

One other thing: if you're worried about ownership costs then maybe F12 ownership is not a great idea. Just depreciation by itself is on the order of $25K annually or more. What's the big concern about maintenance? Drop in the bucket by comparison....

Dealers will tell you its the V12 versus the V8. There is wiggle room if you ask around.

 

Cost of V8 extension cost less than V12. On the other end of spectrum the deposit to order is less for V8 than V12 - at least in Switzerland it is that way
