"brakes failed" Ferrari immediately need the car back for testing and refute that, looks like the driver failed as in “Did your ambition outweigh your talent?” tm. Casey Stoner

Yep, arrived at the corner too fast, panicked and turned onto the gravel on the INSIDE of the corner.

    Not his car I'd bet.

There have been issues of brakes apparently failing on road cars. Discussed somewhere on this site, but apparently is the big word here.

Sounds unlikely, doesn't it? He wasn't just A BIT too fast.

I just can't imagine going into a corner THAT much too fast. It really looks like it was more than just braking too late. We've all done that without a result like that.

He was carrying way too much speed , and I like carrying too much speed !!

He was on a whole new level of OMFG and arsehole puckering :p

I had the throttle stick on WOT at Mallala and only buried the QV 50-60 metres off the track into the kitty litter ........ someone else did a similar thing in a 355 that day as well ..... not mentioning any names but he's a hotshot on this forum

No no, not Steve, this guy CAN drive :D

That's my point... Usually if you brake too late you end up missing the apex, brake later and run off the track a little, brake later and end up in the kitty litter, but to go straight through the kitty litter and have a catastrophic hit? Sounds to me like it was more than an error of judgement.

So you think the "brakes failed" could be true along with the excessive speed ?

But look at the turn in , he's pointing the car at the wrong angle to the corner all together !

I reckon he was on ice

I guess with ABS you wouldn't see tyre smoke as the driver in desperation tried to slow the car?

Brakes can fail on road or race cars, who knows if he adjusted or fiddled with something in the car like trying to disconnect the ABS/traction control or similar, they are connected electronically I believe.

True story following as I was there when it happened at Eastern Creek at a Ferrari Club super sprint day many years back. Back in '89 I had a 328 & 328's had new ABS fitted, the driver of one black coloured 328 back then thought that ABS at that time was slower for track times than without ABS. That same owner of the black 328 who was a past race driver, disconnected the ABS by pulling a fuse I believe & did some laps, he thought the car better for track times without the ABS, however on a second session had a major brake failure into turn 2 hairpin, went straight ahead & wrote the car off.

So as I look at this video again, the driver did well to avoid the other car braking heavily, IMO it really does appear some sort of malfunction or he just didn't apply brakes for some reason, which does seem unlikely, I guess his foot could of slipped off the brake pedal & then he panicked as it was too late, but looks more like malfunction to me.

I broke an engine mount off the start line of a hillclimb once. The engine rocked over and the sharp edge of the intake trumpet severed the brake line. Coming down hill into a hairpin at 70mph was the first time I touched the brakes - went straight to the floor. A very bad feeling.

    :)

What I find odd about the video is there does not appear to be any effort to slow the car at all. Pre ABS surely the car would have left big black tyre skid marks on the track IF the brakes were actually working? To be honest I do not know what the result would be with ABS as I've never raced with it, and other than triggering it due to late braking and the inside tyre lifting and getting light, never had a massive braking effort with ABS.

Every time I look at the video, it looks like the two cars are initially slowing, then the 488 seems to attempt a dive up the inside but gets on the grass and it all ends from there.
