Slight rattle - steering wheel

If the 612 similar to 599 (and other models), pulling apart the steering wheel is pretty straightforward. I have done this myself as I swapped for a CF steering wheel. If you do it yourself changing all screws and bolds is advisable as well as applying the recommended torque when screwing it back!

 

I think @swiss612 had the same or similar problem. He may chime in....

I still did not find what it is
Mine happens when I hit uneven pavement and pot holes
I replaced, tie rods and ball joints, as I first this was the cause... but not
I took the steering wheel off, it is not complicated but you need to be careful not to damage anything ( leather, alu...)
Question is what do you do next..., the steering wheel column and mechanism is a very compact mass and honnestly I could not find where the rattle comes
If you want the procedure to take the wheel off let me know

Key thing before you start, disconnect the battery

 

maybe the springs? i went to H&R and they are quite noisy ... noise i did not have before with HGTE springs ...

Hi, sure
1) start the car, put wheel straight, stop the car, turn off battery switch
2) take rubber caps behind the wheel and take the 2 bolts that are in there ( I think it is Hex or torx, don'r remember)
3) take the airbarg out, he will come out alone, but cables will retain him, the cables are easy to take out, you just need to lift them up on the airbag side, make sure you have a look on the net there is plenty of pictures on how to, also before you have it in your hands make sure you have a small screw driver to lift the connectors out
4) then you are done, you just need to take a big socket, to unscrew the wheel, forgot what it is, could be 32 or smaller
5) from there you can take the plastic cover that are on the column apart, there are screwed from below if i remember

Really simple, you cannot go wrong
1 tip I would give is to use masking tape around the airbarg on the alu part of the steering wheel not to damage anything, just precaution, it is an expensive wheel

Be advised many of the steering wheels have tamper proof bolts, too, so might take a trip to the hardware shop to get everything you need to remove the wheels. Your techs will have those bits.
