Saw this guy ahead of us on the way to LAX the other day. Decided to speed up and reel him in. I thought it was a 747 at first. The lighting wasn't great, but still got descent video. I hope you enjoy it.....

Thanks for the support guys. We were slowly catching him. He was around .82 or .83. I sped up to .86 to shorter the time required. We were at .84 at the time.

Definitely worth the extra fuel. This put us ahead of him for LAX. Customs gets busy when the 380s arrive!

I remember several years ago, I flew from DEN to SAN for Christmas on United; cashed in miles. Had a window seat.

There was a Continental flight that left the exact same time.

The entire flight, there was the other flight, right below us. It was going very slightly faster and by the time we hit CA, I had to lean right against the window and peer ahead to see it.

Thought it was cool at the time.

Shot it with a Sony AX53 camcorder. It's awesome. I've had it a year now and it's changed everything for me.

Here's a short "review" video I shot with it. I still don't have a 4K tv, so can't fully appreciate the quality.

A question: at 0:59, I notice that the inboard contrail on the right seems to go under the horizontal stabilizer, while the corresponding one on the left appears to go over. Is this an optical illusion? Also notice a shadow on the left inboard contrail caused by something. The angle of view?

They both go under. The shadow of the left stabilizer is making the contrail look like it's going over when it's actually under as well.

Lou, your videos are wonderful chances to see the modern in-flight experiences. I have flown in B-24's at high altitude but there never was the striking scenes that you have shown us. Really great! Thank you.

Lou, do you notice the wake from an A380 at all in the 747?

I may have mentioned this before but when the 707 and DC-8 were competing with each other an incident appeared in the comments section of Flight Magazine. A 707 heading east out of LAX was nearing the Grand Canyon and the pilot came on the PA and told the passengers to look out of the left side to see one of the nicest sights in America. The only thing there at the time was a DC-8 below. The 707 pilot said, " We're passing a DC-8 that left LA 10 minutes before we did "

You can feel the wake of preceding aircraft from time to time. We are allowed to offset to the right of course up to 2 miles to avoid it. ATC need not be notified. So I use this to my advantage when taking video. I'll offset slightly to the right to get better footage. Otherwise you can speed up or slow down to get out of "the zone". The 747 rides it pretty well though.

Lou, I would say this is you, but you don't have any pax to announce it to :).

    Nice video.

For the airplane geeks, that is a JAL 747-400 racing a ANA 777-300.
