break in period for new 488

Worth doing a search-many Threads on this topic. In essence the car doesn't really need it, the driver does!

Go enjoy the car, don't redline for the first say 500 miles and for god sakes don't baby it like some showcase car.

 

The user manual I got says "avoid exceeding 5,000 rpm for the first 1000 km (620 miles)" (in "About your vehicle" chapter, there is a "running-in" paragraph in the "driving the vehicle" part).
Assuming they know what they're writing, I just did that, even if it's most probably not critical.

 

On my 430 and 458 which were new, I followed the owners manual. If something happened in the future, I would know it wasn't partially my fault!

No. A myth.

 

I recall hearing Ferrari puts every engine on the dyno for a long time, so no break in is necessary. But this is may be a myth. Most Ferraris need adjusting before they are turned out in the wild.

I was at the factory and saw the dyno cell. I believe they verify engine performance on the dyno, but it's not "for a long time" and is not intended to complete break in.

They were very specific that the Ferrari line gets dyno'd but the engines for Masseratti don't

 

All cars get a functional test drive on local roads. Essentially to make sure everything works, no rattles, runs and drives. Shorter the better.

Engines get a functional test on the dyno...again, make sure there are no leaks, it performs within specs, etc. it's a computer programmed routine, starts low and slow, gets temps and pressures up and then does a few pulls and sustained low, mid and higher rpms.

Break in is a religious topic here, plenty of opinions. FWIW the brakes are 99% likely not to be fully bedded and it does make a big difference in how the CCMs work....so I would bed them in.
