It's always nice to see TO from the air upon return, the 401 after tho, always makes me want to go back to the airport immediately.

Today was working on my 75nm cross country requirement plus navigating class C airspace KOAK and learning flight following. Pic is heading over Oakland Coliseum and Arena on the way from KHWD to KO69 and back.

This was taken from a 2017 SR20 G6 while I was doing transition training today. We did a round robin from KGMU to KCUB to KMYR, to KJZI and back to KGMU. I logged 5.8 hours and learned a whole lot. Magnificent flying machine!

    Nice... aren't there 3 'boilers'?

There's another one up near Tonopah also, I think.

People that work there watch birds fly into the beam... they catch fire and spiral down like a WWI plane going down.

There are three boilers. Its an amazing place to look at especially when the towers are glowing in the heat of the day. They say each mirror is the size of a garage door.

I remember hearing the controversy when they were building this.

This was pushed through by Obama without the typical Environmental Impact Studies.

The claim from the environmentalist's was birds flying over it would vaporize and planes would experience extreme turbulence. I know the plane part isn't true and I suspect the bird part is B.S. Its not like all of the sudden it goes from 80 degrees to 800 degrees. I'm guessing birds would turn around. Or would they? They do know
which way to fly in the winter...

    From Wikipedia:

"During the trial of the plant in September 2013, 34 dead birds were found at the plant, 15 of which had heavily burned feathers, which staff at the plant referred to as "streamers" because they were burned in flight by the intense radiation from the heliostat mirrors."

It goes on to say they estimate about 6,500 birds and bats die per year there. Hawks and Owls chasing small birds, and small birds and bats chasing insects.

And the temp is over 1,000 degrees F, and it's pretty abrupt.

Collateral damage... like the wind turbines killing all the hawks and eagles.
