The big question Lou? Did you show signs of air rage by flashing your landing lights while overtaking "Fred" :D

No rage. I just wished he was a little faster. Hard to try and stay with him at that speed.

Unfortunately we were 3000 feet. Couldn't get a clearance to climb due to other traffic. No vortex worries for us....I'll let those below us worry....

So, you do not try to have a drag race with a C-5 in the air?

Are there any aircraft you try to race? "race"?

I think that I was interrupted in my last attempt to respond to your C-5 post. I remember working on the C-5 proposal and we were told that the Boeing airplane was the winner but the Lockheed actually y won. Our loss was a blessing in disguise because it opened the door to the 747. It seemed that it was almost immediately that we started on the 747 design and used many of the big numbers from the C-5 stuff. A little German engineer was in our car pool and he was remorseful for a week because he couldn't justify the figures that he was getting from the turning loads on the nose gear until he finally realized that the airplane was so big. Later on when I was in the Abottsford Air Show, the first C-5 was there and gave us a fly by. It was astonishing when they made a turning pull up and it took 5 to 10 seconds for the ailerons to take effect to bank the airplane. The airplane kept going for a while until finally it responded to the input.I don't know if it ever got spoilers.

When the C-5 would occasionally come into and out of Burbank to the Lockheed plant, it was always amazing to see it get airborne so quickly. Almost looked fake - helped by the fact that it was usually lightly loaded.

Once a month, on a moonless night, they would come in and load up a single new F-117 to take away to the range.

Lou, what was your speed delta? If he was at Mach .76, where do you cruise? Maybe a better question is what's the ground speed delta?

Thanks again for posting these vids; they're great.

Looks like it... here's a video of C5 'spoiler flutter'.

The follow-up video is entertaining, too.

It looks like a C-5M with the longer fan cowls of the CF6 engines.

We were originally .84 and had to slow down big time to try and stay with him.

Thanks, hopefully more videos coming soon...

I just looked it up... looks like the delta is about 50-60 mph.
And... you weigh a lot more. Well, 100+k more gross.

Would love to have seen their faces...

We're used to getting passed by pretty much everyone except the C-17's. They plan us pretty slow with the A/B models, but there are only 4 of those left flying.

I should NOT have watched those two vids.

OTOH, I've survived so far, but ignorance was bliss.

Its not uncommon. Often times its due to wear in a mounting bushing. Its best to get it fixed sooner rather than later, otherwise the spoiler panel might have to be replaced. I have heard of planes losing spoiler panels completely and not knowing it. That appears to be one of the ground spoilers, so it wouldn't move with control wheel input. Even if it was a flight spoiler the handling characteristics of the airplane would probably be about the same.
