To bad. This will make the Us version worth aprox 1/2 of the row model. 25 years from now, wait. You can build it back to the intended look. But then it would not be original. Beeing. This is how they left the factory. Ugly. But originall.

It is universally accepted that the Eu/ROW look is much more aesthetically pleasing.

Its also worth more to most people, for that exact reason.

Stating that a car has been modified is simply full disclosure, in the same way one might state that a car has had paintwork. Its not disparaging the car, its simply being transparent.

That said, if I were to convert a USA-spec Fuelie to the Eu/ROW look, I would go 100%, leaving no traces of the USA nonsense, like this guy below.

The only way you can tell its not a Downdraft is the engine cover.

Hey Joe, I think people are perceiving the word "modified" as disparaging to the car, even though you clarify that you don't mean it that way. "Modified" usually means "BAD" to most car guys. You might want use some different term. Perhaps "DOT bumpers corrected" would be more pleasing, since we all feel these bumpers were an unfortunate occurrence.

    Understood & agreed.

That said I don't think there is any need for anyone to get bent out-of-shape over clear language as used for an accurate description!

My word, people are sensitive these days! :)

Anyhow, the point I was trying to illustrate with the Bianco Perlato Fuelie I posted above above is that, if the Eu/ROW conversion is done completely and to a high standard, it must surely make the car not only more aesthetically pleasing but also more valuable than in it's original USA guise.

That's perhaps something we can all agree on.

Is there a trick to re-aligning the doors? I tried loosening the bolts and adjusting by hand but I think I made things worse. :( Maybe a 2 or 3 person job?

I have not done it, but have on many other cars. On this one two people would certainly help. Myself I would take the green painters tape and put on every edge. I like to mark the original position with a marker that can be wiped off or a pencil before I loosen anything. Look at the striker plate & make sure it has not moved first, especially if your trying to raise the door at the back. Make sure the latch is working smoothly & maybe spray a little wd40 on it.

One of the benefits of this community is that there are many things hidden around, such as the Rallye Racing magazine from 1 Jan 1978 in my collection...

I was going to say (even before I saw your post) that perhaps the reason this car's rear-end got changed was the fact that it was in a rear-end accident.

I learned with Miuras that anytime you see one with the rear end in non-original configuration, a rear-end accident is a likely reason.

I wonder how much of this "Mercedes-Benz" history the current owner knows?

    Excellent find.

This answers a lot of questions.

You can see that the rear end exists today using incorrect rear reflectors (from an LP400S to QV).

The rear badges have been placed slightly askew from original placement.

The original unique rear valance has been discarded post-accident ion favor of the standard item.

For such an historic car, I would correct all those details.
