Why was Schumacher such a poor starter?

For a 7 time WDC why was he so sketchy when it comes to starts, it was not unusual for him to give away a position or even 2 from pole.

 

You sure about that? You may thinking of Hamilton.

 

Yes true. He was not in the Weber category of bad starters but never a great one. He was though good on the first lap so if he managed to get to the first corner first (nail biting stuff for us spectators) he would pull a gap.

A really poor start was the cause of him breaking his leg at Silverstone ... team took blame IMO

Yep agree with this. He had a few bad starts (like plenty have) that cost him dearly, so perhaps some give him an unfair reputation for being a slow starter.

 

Rubens takes the cake on this one...no one else started in reverse!!

 

Apparently he's not the best skier either...

Seriously? So now one can not post anything if there is the likely possibility that it will cause a couple people to feel offended, even when the intention of the post was not specifically aimed at those individuals? Might as well shut down the entire F1 sub-forum.

 

Making fun of a man gravely ill, one so well respected and loved, is just bad form. It added NOTHING to the discussion, only his ill attempt at dark humour.

So f***ing what. He won the races and crushed opposition with his pre-eminent skill. If he had not fluffed the starts it would have been even more of a whitewash. If you are in any doubt go and have a beer with Eddie Irivine. Fluffing starts kept it interesting

 

Getting back on topic:

I don't think Schumacher was any worse or any better than any other driver for getting off the line "back in the day".

Name one driver from back then who was renowned for making outstanding starts just about every time!:

Mika Häkkinen?: He was better than most, but I wouldn't say his starts really stood out every time.
David Coulthard?: No chance!
Juan Pablo Montoya?: Some were good, some were poor.
Jacques Villeneuve?: Nothing exceptional.
Damon Hill?: No!
Eddie Irvine?: Not really.
Rubens Barrichello?: Another who was okay but not outstanding.
Felipe Massa: Not really.
Ralf Schumacher?: Some were good, most were average at best.
Kimi Raikkonen?: Pretty average.
Heinz Harold Frentzen?: No.
Martin Brundle?: Some good, some poor.

And it's pretty much the same with every other driver you can name from back then, they were all a bit hit or miss off the line.

 

I don't seem to remember him giving up so many starts??? if anything Schumacher was a consummate pole starter... He would take off, and put in astounding first 5 laps - trying to demoralize the others.... at Bennetton it was a bit harder as the car was not always great.... and then they thought they were running TC... so perhaps that is what this guy is talking about. but at Ferrari if he was on pole... pretty good chance he would win. especially from 99 to 2005.

 

So to sum this up: the guy posted a joke the moderator smiled at first and then he got banned for trolling because he was aware that some might be offended by this sort of humour???
Ban him after the joke or do not ban him at all...but this is not logical...

 

Phil, he was worse than most. I was an extremely passionate MS fan back then and used to watch each race start, especially when he started with Ferrari, holding my breath.

Of course by 2002, etc. it didn't matter, but in those early desperate to finally get a Ferrari WDC it was nerve racking!

Caligula stated in his follow up post that he knew his "joke" would cause upset to others on Fchat - That should have told him that he shouldn't post it then.

Had he said that whilst in poor taste, it wasn't his intention to offend any other members on the site, then maybe he would have avoided the ban.

The rules on deliberately baiting, trolling, upsetting or offending other Fchat members are quite clear.

 

Agreed. The joke was tasteless and should have been removed. Not worth a ban.
That the guy said he knew it would cause some drama was - in my guess - self-defense after realizing it wasn't a great move rather than acknowledging the attempt of trolling.

 

I agree with the minority here on the ban. I think it was overboard, especially an entire month. The trolling was put in place to keep people in check in this forum to stop every thread from becoming disgusting and not readable. However, i myself have a dark sense of humor and i laughed at it.

 

Posting something that may be upsetting or offending to other members is not restricted. Posting something to intentionally upset or offend someone is. BIG difference, and the post did not meet the latter (IMO).
