Injection was in cars from the 60s and 911s have had them for decades. For me, it's driver aids. That begins with ABS.

Well ... Porsche 356/A Speedsters are lighter than the coupes. But for the most part, yes.

Agree, the performance difference at this point is measured in degrees of mediocrity.

Wow... great post. I've been saying this for a while, but I haven't been a "younger guy" for quite some time, so good to hear it.

I'm 36 and I just bought my 308 this past weekend. I agree with knightmare that plenty of people in their 30's want a raw experience. I have owned several modern sports cars and done a lot of autocross and track time with them, but I eventually tired of the arms race. Modern sports cars are fun in their own way, but even the purest modern sports car is very filtered compared to my 308 or my '73 911.

To each his own, but I think there will be plenty of demand for classic sports cars going forward.

According to this theory, then the early model Testarossa and 348s are in this bucket as well. Which would also include the trans am era of smoky and the bandit ;)

Must say, this does sound interesting.

    Thank you for the post.

Glad to hear that the younger guys from the Web 2.0 days are keeping up the demand for the older cars/trucks, I'm from the older Web 1.0 days and got my 328 before the bust in 2001 :)

Yes, it is. The 246 was the worst investment as it already costed like today. The glass not much better. The 328 (GTB) was excellent. The best were the 308 GTB drysump (steel) and the 208 turbo (all models) that now are twice the may 2014 values (or even more for the drysump).

Future is always uncertain: always better buying the model you like, as so you are sure it's the "best investment" for you. Maybe you will loose money, but you will always be happy with the cars you like.

I still think the 308 family is the best looking Ferrari since 1970, and by far (it includes the 288 GTO, that is a 308, exactly like the Mondial T is a Mondial and not a 348 cabrio).

    ciao

Interesting how things changed since 2014. In the years from 2014-2017 my 328 has appreciated by around 250% but my Lotus Esprit by around 400%.

Any car with average miles on it and a manual stick transmission should not be expected to rise in value. How many potential owners can even drive one over the age of 50? With a decreasing number of buyers everyday...
Picked up a 97' Espirit with 28k miles for 27K on ebay last year, which at the time was a direct competitor to the 355 and they may be the best thrill/exotic bang for the buck on the market. For some reason, generally English cars don't seem to hold their value as well as their Euro counterparts, at least in the US.

Thats exactly the opposite of what is actually happening. Why is there a decreasing number of buyers? Well I suppose it depends on where you are located but in the UK the classic car market is expanding at a huge rate.

    Andy,

The Hagerty values of 328s are similar to 2014 prices except for concours and exceptional cars. The Esprits are also flat. The European market is a bit stronger but also down from late 2015 prices.

I agree that Ferrari prices have cooled since 2015. But "Guigaro" S1 and Turbo Esprits and others are up and likely continue to rise as summer approaches. Its relative though, they have been cheap for years with virtually none above 20K GBP until quite recently. Early Turbo cars have sold for 35K and 50K GBP in the past few weeks. Here is another although this is a pretty exceptional car: 1981 RHD Ex-Colin Chapman Lotus Esprit turbo For Sale on Car And Classic UK [C864651]

kenb " How many potential owners can even drive one over the age of 50?" What planet do you live on?? I'm OVER SIXTY and have bought five Ferraris in the last three years. Do you think that people over fifty are only driving in hove arounds or golf carts?

I read your post and couldn't believe what I just read. Life doesn't END at fifty, For many people, they're just hitting stride, can buy ANY car they want, and certainly can get in and out of low, fun cars! Lot of gray haired guys driving some pretty nice cars.

Thanks to yoga and weight training, I am stronger and more limber than I was 20 years ago (kinda sorta).

Okay kenb, we're out to getcha now! :)

I think a more accurate statement might be how many drivers UNDER 50 know how to drive a car with a manual transmission g:)

As soon as Ken hits 50 his wife will confiscate all of his cars, leaving him with nothing but a tricycle. Poor Ken.

Actually I thought thats what Ken meant but typed wrongly. Although that would apply to the USA, pretty much everyone in Europe learns on manual.

I have never been one to care much about my 328's "value," but I have to say I'm surprised (in a nice way) to see that on several sites that specialize in selling such cars, the ASKING prices on all the '89 328 GTSs I saw are all over 100k USD. When I bought mine in 2008 with 24k miles, the asking price from the one of the same companies was 54K.

Basically, the relative asking prices on the several sites I viewed on all the 3x8 series mirrors what they were when I was looking for an '89 328. IOW, the price on all are higher but the the percentage difference between the years is about the same. As always, lower mileage brings higher posted prices.

Of course, we all know that asking prices are meaningless; it is worth only what someone will pay but since the asking prices have apparently doubled, I would ASSUME (perhaps incorrectly) that the selling prices would follow accordingly.

As far as whether a 308 or 328 is a better "investment," it appears to me that the percentage change in price from 2008 to now is about the same. IOW, a 328 50k USD (asking) then is a 100k USD now. For a 308, a 35k price then seems to be a 65k-70k price now. Again, this is based on: Asking price and companies selling cars in the USA.

I attend many car shows every year for work. The same guys every year. Very few young care. You hear lots of owners taking about how their kids aren't the least bit interested in their cars when they pass.

The cell phone now does what the car did. Boys show off and communicate through social media now. The constant henpecking of masculinity and emphasis on androgyny in popular culture and academia only adds to it. Some psychological space that the car once filled in a young man's life has been lost and these same emotions now expressed via the phone.

    iPhone is the new horse.

Between just not caring and being taught that the automobile is responsible for the impending melt down of planet earth and an enemy to a sane society many younger people have no interest.
