With all the love being shown for Massa,Kimi,Stroll and now Lewis perhaps it's time to take another look at 'Teflonso' who seem's to always somehow manage to deflect any criticism away from his super talented self?

Ferrari, Mercedes moves for Alonso unlikely says Lauda

Niki Lauda has played down Fernando Alonso's chances of leaping to the front of the grid for 2018.

The Spaniard, obviously frustrated with his dire situation at McLaren-Honda, will make a bid for victory at the fabled Indy 500 next month.

And Lauda, the F1 legend and Mercedes team boss, says he understands why Alonso wants to do it.

"He's bored," the great Austrian told the Spanish broadcaster Movistar, "and he needs a challenge.

"As a driver I understand, but for McLaren to let him go in the most important race of the year and where they can have their best result is a tough decision to make.

"It's a good decision for Alonso because he can enjoy things there that he cannot do here, and I'm curious to see what he can do at Indy," Lauda added.

Beyond 2017, however, Alonso's future is wide open. He is said to have already had talks with Renault, but the 'big two' in F1 are Ferrari and Mercedes.

Lauda doubts either of them are options for the 35-year-old.

"He left a lot of trouble with his teams when he left," he said. "I don't think Ferrari wants to have him again. He left with a contract. The same thing happened with us (McLaren-Mercedes).

"We (Mercedes) have drivers who do their job, so if we win with Hamilton and Bottas, we don't need a replacement."

Nonetheless, Lauda said Alonso's actual talent is beyond dispute.

"He is fast, aggressive, in this way he is the best. But unfortunately, drivers sometimes cannot prove they are the best by the decisions they make, and Alonso has made many mistakes," he said.

"He left Ferrari very early and decided to go to McLaren, but the problem with Honda's engine development was already known. Now he's disappointed, but going to McLaren was his decision," added Lauda.

He was and probably still is a great driver .

At the same time being involved in Crashgate to me puts a very large question mark over his
honesty and credibility, this is one of the reasons some might think that he sucks.

We didn't even get started on Spygate yet!

Alonso is a team killer. Him parking his underperforming McLaren is just further proof. He has wasted his own talents. Enough teams have given him more than enough opportunity for succes. He had two championships. Be happy. Move on because they won't happen again.

I think Alonso is a good example that statistics are not telling the whole story.
Alonso undoubtly is a great talent just as Hamilton and Vettel are...Now compare his career since he and Hamilton were team mates at McLaren...Switch their career from that point and Alonso would walk in Schumachers paths and Hamilton would be nowhere in the books (most likely). So only a few wise or stupid career moves made a huge difference but do not tell a lot about the drivers abilities.
But at least Alonso is living in a time where one could make a lot of money in F1 so a full bank account might comfort him in his decisions.

Alonso can be an excellent driver .... when motivated.

But he turns into a whiner too easily.
And he does not work and play well with others. ;)
(Not to mention tossing everyone else under the bus when he's unhappy.)

Kimi won his WDC because Alonso was having a tantrum against Hami.
Vettel won his first WDC because, frankly, Alonso choked.

Kimi seems hard to motivate, too. But he can get along with a teammate.

Alonso will *always* be on a one driver team.
    ("You're too close to Fernando.")

And Alonso's two WDCs were largely a result of the tire wars -- the overly thin / light Michelins over the heavier (but safer) Bridgestones.

Alonso is one of several drivers who haven't done well under the new Pirelli tire rules.

(Massa also suffered from having to preserve his tires in the first few laps. If you'll recall, Massa did most of his passing the first 5 laps -- which he can't do with the Pirellis.)

When Alonso flames out at Indy, who will be blame?

    Andretti?
    Honda?
    Both?

Fernando will smash it at Indy, just watch, he may not have the best personality, but as a driver, he is definitely very very capable. Ferrari would've won a few more WDC and WCC if they had given that man a little more support and made better strategy choices, they let him down, alonso didn't choke.. sorry guys

Not all the decisions are purely in the hands of the drivers and especially with the change of the regulations it also is a lot of luck as nobody could predict that the Mercedes will be so dominant with the McLaren that bad at the same time.
