My mechanic told me that the air injection pump on my '99 355 is functional but getting weak. He also mentioned that new units are no longer available from Ferrari and that he hasn't yet been able to locate a replacement that can be easily installed with minor modification. He recognizes that used pumps may be available but could also be a bit of a "crapshoot". Has anyone in the brotherhood had to deal with this problem. If yes, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

When I got mine the air pump wasn't working, so after dismantling the shaft bush inside was worn to excess, causing the fan inside to bind on the body, I replaced the bush with a wheel bearing from an rc car, spare ones from my t-max as I remember. Anyway after that and a clean inside, every time I start it from cold the pump whistles away nice and strong, when it's gone of it's set to drive.

Thanks Jase! If nothing's available, your rebuild approach might be the only choice.

Good stuff! For the DIY there are sometimes fixes like this that help make these cars less onerous to maintain. I had a similar experience repairing my headlight motor for nothing. Thanks for posting.

Just wondering if the filter material is standard?

Is it possible to buy and fit new filtering material?

    Thanks

Ian, you can remove the fence holding the filter in and then remove the medium. I went to a a fish hobby store and got a flat piece of filter material approximately the same thickness and using the existing material as a template, cut a new piece.

I have enough material to make a bunch of these and was sending them to whoever needed one for free but the postage to down under might exceed the cost of the material. :).

Dave Helms suggested that a dirty filter medium might contribute to the issue with these pumps and services it as part of a major service.

Thanks, gents. I thought there might be some science involved (matching porosity values). Does it have to be resitant to anything or is it just blowing fresh air into the exhaust system?

What helps keep its shape when the pump is running? Does it fold over a supporting framework similar in shape to the outer grille?

Yes it does just blow air. I can not remember been 5 years since I serviced mine. Likely some screen on inside as well.

Thanks, Grant, I'll look into it. I'm pulling my car to pieces at the moment just for the fun of it :D

    Cheers
