After searching for an aftermarket wireless/bluetooth adaptor for my 30pin iPod aux cord and reading forums, I decided to purchase the following:

    https://www.amazon.com/CoolStream-Bluetooth-Receiver-accessories-Motorcycles/dp/B00GHUHMUS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494634054&sr=8-1&keywords=coolstream+bluetooth

My goal was to eliminate the cable so I could wirelessly connect my phone tucking cable and accessory behind dash. Simple enough, Accessory arrived today from Amazon and I plugged it in, turned the ignition on, and tried to search for the bluetooth connection on my iPhone.

That's when I smelled it. Burning electrical smoke smell.

We all know the reputation of italian wires and when that smell hit my nose, Panic set in. I immediately looked behind me to engine compartment for signs of smoke, none. Looked ahead to front trunk then dash, radio, then looked down to discover the adaptor smoking and melting.

I immediately un plugged the adaptor and for once, as luck would have it, the hot plastic avoided my leather seats and instead got my lap.

Ever seen someone dance inside a ferrari before like his pants are on fire?? It happened.

Caution on aftermarket accessories as who knows what would have happened if i had plugged this in and closed the glovebox or trunk.

The item in question is "Coolstream" Duo bluetooth adaptor and well,

    here's what happened:

Thanks for the tip. I am unconvinced there is much advantage to a Bluetooth adapter, since running apps (GPS, streaming music) drains the IPhone so quickly, you need a corded connection anyway, so just plug in and be done with it.

BTW, is your 30 pin to lightning adapter work with your IPhone? I couldn't get it to work (Apple OEM version), so I bought this for the Becker 6112 radio I have in my 430 Scuderia: iL-BKR Apple Lightning Adapter for select Becker AUX Ready Radios :: iPod Adapters & Interfaces

The also make a version that terminates in a USB, but can't find it on their website anymore.

I would have to say the fact that it happened in a Ferrari is probably immaterial since it's a battery operated device and it only used the very low voltage aux input to the Becker....but yes, there are a ton of low quality Chinese devices out there that could implode at any moment. It's especially notable that in home products, if a device isn't UL listed and it causes a fire, there may be some issues with insurance. Good post..

    Thanks for that link.
I think the appeal of BT is, the units are cheap, non invasive ie don't have to pull the head unit, and don't interfere with operation of cd changers (iirc, to use the aux in plugs, you have to disable the cd changer?) and some of them even have sd card inputs built in, USB ports for phone charging etc.

New tech and old tech sometimes don't work together well. Good thing you did a test run. You may be beter off replacing the head unit with a bluetooth equipped head uni (nothing too fancy or over the top and nothing cheap either).

Amazing how a little thing such as that could have cost you a whole lot of headache. Glad you and your toys are all right.

Thanks for the post. I know we were looking into similar solutions for our 360, but will probably change out the receiver instead of trying to get something like this to work out! Thanks for the bullet dodged!

Any idea what went wrong? If the unit shorted and was drawing too much current, why didn't a fuse blow?

I really would have liked to keep everything stock looking. Figured this would be a simple solution to plugging a phone it on a long drive. The manufacture has reached out to help, but i'm just wishing there is a solution out there for a plug and play BT device.
