I'm currently in the market for a 488 GTB and I was wondering would it be better to buy pre-owned or would it be better just to build my own and buy new I'm not sure what is considered a fair percentage off of MSRP on a preowned??? Any thoughts??

It depends on how many options you want and the color combo.

If you're looking for a red/tan or red/black car, there will be several pre-owned ones on the market with reasonable options on them.
You can save a few dollars buying one of those.

Otherwise, talk to your local Ferrari dealer and find out when realistically you can expect to take delivery of a new 488 that you order.
Most dealers these days can get you that car in 12 to 18 months time.

The waiting times for a new Ferrari have gotten much more reasonable in the past 5 years.
For example, 11 years ago back in 2006, when I ordered a new 430, the waiting list was 4 years long, you had to be invited by the dealer to put your name on the new car list, and you had to put a $10k deposit down.

If you can wait then I would definitely order a new car. There is nothing like ordering one exactly like you want. If however you don't want to wait then buy used but do not pay over list for one they should be available used for under list by now.

It depends on how long you want to keep the car. If you are going to keep it forever then new is the way to go, if you are going to keep it for a year or so, used is the best way financially. I have bought 2 new and 3 used. I will say I will probably buy used from now on just because I enjoy the search and dealing as much as the car, so I want someone else to take the hit on value. New is fun, but searching the market is the most fun.

Interesting that we have the exact same purchase history.

    I bought a 2006 430 and 2011 458 new and the used cars were a 1988 328, 1998 550, and a 2001 360.

I'm on my 6th Ferrari....3new /3preowned. It all comes down to personal choice. I've bought new because i was going to keep it for a while, enjoyed the spec'ing process and to get brownie points from the dealer when I wanted another model down the road that was going to be hard to get. But as long as they are optioned well and discounted properly from strictly a money standpoint it really makes no sense to buy new. Buying new is almost always a losing proposition. Today it seems like a new model or a variation of a current model is coming out every 18 to 24 months. So unless your lucky enough to buy limited editions they are all money losers. A depreciating asset where every added mile makes it worth less whether buying or selling. Finding the right price depends on model/options/color/year/milage. Just shop around and do some homework and it shouldn't take you long to figure it out...... Finding the right car is half the fun!

Find an ad with some guy promising to text you pictures and give them a sizable deposit for their splendid salesmanship. Just cause. :)

When I'm ready I'll spec new when resellers are asking far above MSRP. Used when the market is below MSRP.

Once upon a time, in another place, far, far away, dealers used to get around their geographical and MSRP restrictions by have a preferred customer buy a hot new model for MSRP, drive it around for a few months, and then the dealer would flip the car to a wholesaler for an additional $25k - $50k. I'm sure nothing like this happens anymore.

Far as I know, all 488GTBs are selling over MSRP with miles or not. The only way you will get a new one is to step into an order that someone backed out of. Otherwise, be ready to wait if you can get on the list. Remember, you need to have owned a Ferrari before if you want consideration for a new one. In my case I bought new because someone didn't take delivery and spec'd the car the way I wanted it. So I ended up paying a little less than MSRP because mine is a Cali T which isn't as in demand as the 488 is. However, mine is the HS which is more limited due to it being a new option. The fewer cars made, the less likely you are to get one new or otherwise.
