    True.

But it's slower, hasn't got as much torque, doesn't handle as well or steer as well, hasn't got SS2, has less grip, has inferior brakes, isn't as stiff, has less downforce, doesn't ride as well and isn't as well made...

    :)

The sound is really good and you have to take into account, that a YouTube video does not make any justice.
I would guess it has a Novitec exhaust.

Here is a video I just shot from the Challenge car races at the Montreal GP. Two brand new 488's go by and sound pretty damn good...that is until the yellow 458 challenge car comes through :)
I know these cars have open exhausts but it's amazing the difference in sound even in the street cars.

I was in fantastic love with my 458......

Until I drove a 488. 488 does everything better in every way other than sound.

I think this is truly the issue, most people knock on the 488, even the sound, with a major culprit being they haven't driven one. No matter how many YouTube videos you watch on standard speakers, they will never accurately describe how the 488 feels.

At a Ferrari event, I got to drive my car with plenty of 458 cars and never felt wanting of that sound, 458 had its unique sound, 488 has its own as well. All cars were stock too.

It really is a wonderful package put together.

I just drove a 488 on Monticello Raceway here in NY. Omg. It really is an amazing car and is super fast. And it certainly sounds good from the inside. A Corsa Pilota driver took me out for a hot lap as well. The car seemed like it was on rails. Loved it!

Steve...glad you had a chance to drive it. As you well know, I am coming from a Scuderia. There is nothing about the 488 that leaves me feeling like I am missing anything. Actually quite the contrary. Extremely pleased with the total package....sound, feel, looks, comfort, speed, handling etc.
Ferrari crushed it in every sense of the word.

I think the 488 would continue to be doubted by the people who have either not spent time with it or not spent much of any time with it. As time passes it will be thought of much better than maybe it is today.

    Speaking of which:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-fLy5jf0As

(Another good spot to spot the difference, on track: 2016 Ferrari Challenge events with the 458 and 2017 Ferrari Challenge events with the 488)

Proof that Ferrari keeps improving and the dream of owning one is still very much alive and kicking. The 458 isn't a better car just in terms of sound than a 488, but I won't even go there. As I said before, despite being heavily biased: praising the 458 doesn't equal diminishing the 488, nor praising the 488 casts a shadow over the 458. I just think that if you always think the newer car is better because it's new, you'll never be happy. There's an x-factor with the 458 and how it makes you feel which the 488, as faster and better as it may be, doesn't have. All that is left are numbers in an Excel spreadsheet. I'm sure the 488 is waaaaaaaaaaay better in every measurable way than an F40. And yet, in terms of the raw emotion of a Ferrari, the F40 blows the 488 to kingdom come. All I'm saying is that things aren't so simple. Lots of variables involved, lots of bias and result depends on what you aim to achieve behind the wheel. I know fellow Ferrari owners and enthusiasts that couldn't care less about a modern Ferrari: they'd have a 308 or a 328 over an F430 for instance, everyday of the week.

It's difficult to make cathegorical remarks with respect to the 458 vs. 488 debate. Even when it comes to sound, or journalist/public reception (which was one of universal acclaim with the 458 and a more toned down yet still welcoming reception regarding the 488). What seems so far undisputable is that in terms of Ferrari's history and milestones, the 458 is a more significant car (firsts and lasts). That said, I'd have a 488 in any color, shape or form any day of the week. But I won't part ways with my 458 no matter what.

Regarding sound: the 488 isn't actually that bad, nor as bad as most folks say it is. Problem is when you compare it to the 458. By comparison, it doesn't stand a chance. If the 458 didn't exist, I'm sure the 488 wouldn't be as criticised as it is.

Can't agree with the first bit of your assessment for the reasons mentioned above, but I strongly agree with the last sentence and praise your forethought.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

am I crazy, because I actually think that that 488 doesn't sound that great. I'm hoping that on the 488 GTO they finally come up with an sexy exhaust note

    I think it sounds fantastic.
And our stock 488 spider already sounds wonderful even compared the the Italia and Speciale. Seriously.

If you haven't owned or driven the 488 spider, go check it out.

I actually like the sound of a stock 488 GTB. Its nothing compared to a 458 Speciale but still very unique to it. This 488 in the video thought doesn't do it for me.

I think it should be a rule that anyone who complains about the 488 sound please clarify whether you have driven one or actually seen one in person. Anyone who has experienced the total package has no issues with the sound or anything else about the car.
