agreed he got robbed last fight
Absolutely a gift for Ward and deep down I think he knows it. He'll have to bring his A+ game this time to end the controversy and quiet the naysayers. Kovalev is taking no prisoners this time.
+1 Kovalev is talking a big talk this time around, hopefully he can deliver the KO he is promising. I see this, I kinda thought Mayweather would have changed the date so it didn't clash with the Canelo/GGG fight so Mayweather can get as many PPVs as he can.
Mayweather vs McGregor fight is a joke. 49-0 considered one of the best "Boxer" of all time against a 0-0 fighter. Great payday easy 50th win. McGregor never experienced the kind of footwork and defense Mayweather has, amongst all his other weapons. It's like an ice hockey player trying to compete at the highest level of figure skating. I'll still be paying and watching it.
The 8/26 Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor is a Showtime PPV event whereas the 9/16 Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez fight is an HBO PPV event, two different independent production entities. That said, there are 3 weeks between those 2 fights and you best believe the 2 entities have consulted and are satisfied that PPV draw will be unaffected. Anytime 2 professionals climb into the ring to fight, its no joke, anything can happen, that's why they stage the fight, and that's why this fight is generating interest, if the result was a foregone conclusion, there'd be no PPV draw. That said, there is more going on here than meets the eye. Like him or not, FM is a smart cookie, and, getting a dominant MMA fighter to fight a dominant Boxer using the Boxer's fighting style & terms to suggest which of the 2 types of fighter is the best, is PR genius for both FM's legacy and boxing. The fight game is a business, and as they say in business, you get what you negotiate. Now let's see what happens in the ring, and I agree with you, we'll be paying & watching.
Disagree. I've read that both fighters will get OVER $100 million each. That's a pretty expensive joke ! McGregor has the height/reach/youth advantage. And I would venture to say that most MMA champions do know how to box. If McGregor wins, that would be a huge boost for MMA. If he loses, there will be a lot of "I told you so" going on. One big disadvantage for McGregor is endurance. Most MMA fights are over in a few rounds. He wil likely have to go several rounds with Mayweather, and will probably get tired out. He might also lose his cool and try some MMA moves. Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see !
I think the only shot McG has is to overwhelm FM. MMA fighting, generally, is much more aggressive than boxing (these days at least). I don't think FM will hurt McG all that much, even with his best shots. McG is use to 4oz gloves versus the 10oz gloves they'll be fighting with. On the other hand, I don't think FM has been hit by anyone with McG's power recently. If McG can get in a few clean power shots early, he has a chance. The longer the fight drags on, the better chance FM has. All of this assumes McG will be able to touch FM, which is not guaranteed. Mark
This may settle the boxer vs MMA argument... from a boxing stance. MMA has very little in the form of discipline whereas boxing has so many lame rules.
Kovalev "stormed out" of their final press conference yesterday. Kovalev tells Ward: ?Get prepared," then storms out of press conference » Boxing News Video below shows this at 30 mins 25 seconds.... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8gMnHHlPuA&t=30m25s[/ame]
They'll put on a show for a few rounds. At some point I think Floyd will hit McGregor with a check hook on his way in and McGregor will be counted out. As pointed out whether like him or not Floyd Mayweather is a genius in the ring and outside the ring. This matchup is a PR work of art second only to his fight wth Manny.
I don't think you're right about that. McG is going to come to fight. FM is a master, though, no question about that. IMO, he is the best pound for pound fighter who has ever put the gloves. I just don't think he has the power to really put McG down anymore. FM has admitted himself his power is nothing like it use to be. Mark
Mayweather just isn't a power fighter though, he primarily focuses on defence and then being opportunistic with counter punches when his opponent overcommits. A huge number of his wins are points decisions, and he seems to deliberately go for this, often throwing light accurate jabs with little power just to get the points in. Compare Mayweather's 49(26 by KO)-0 record with that of an old powerhouse like George Foreman: 76(68 by KO)-5. I don't know anything at all about McGregor so can't comment on him. MMA doesn't hold any attraction for me. However, given that Mayweather doesn't really come to a match with a plan other than being as conditioned as possible, his adaptive style means they'll both be trying to figure each other out in the early rounds before someone makes some headway. I would hazard a guess that it'll ultimately be a points decision in Mayweather's favor, just because he's got great defence and so much experience in fighting for points victories. All the best, Andrew.
I agree with a lot of this, but FM will definitely be coming with a plan. It'll be the same plan he's employed for quite some time; counter strike. FM has said he fights in this manner because he does not have the power he once did. He's not usually looking to take someone's head off. He's looking to win the fight. A lot of people hate his style. I think it's pure art. Don't get me wrong. I don't think McG is going to win. In fact, he may be embarrassed. However, I give him a punchers chance. He's got A LOT of power. If it's a decision, FM all the way. Mark
Again, I just don't see a fighter with ZERO boxing experience putting up a fight against (49-0) FM. 2 different sports. Online, There are videos of nobody contenders having their way with McG. https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2017/6/16/15815654/boxer-posts-conor-mcgregor-sparring-video-im-no-floyd-mayweather-but-i-landed-at-will-mma-ufc-boxing
Agreed entirely, can't wait. This will be very interesting, because, its not as easy to hurt someone with 10oz padded gloves. That's the fascination of this fight, whether that's a legitimate conclusion or not, by the simple expedient of staging this fight, with the stroke of a pen and without even throwing a single punch yet, FM has turned this into Boxing vs MMA in the hearts & minds of many people. That's huge, its also brilliant. Sounds like you are a student of FM's repertoire! True, but in boxing, power ain't everything as many Champions will tell you, that said, this is a man who is full of surprises, as is the sport. By 1974, did we think Ali still had enough to knock the fearsome George Foreman out? No way, he'll be killed, they said. Precisely. Exactly, that said, anything can happen.
A lot of us are caught up in the hype. The media got us exactly where they want us, and that's OK. Hey, Ill be paying for it, I guess i'm caught up in it too. Remember a great NHL player competing in the highest level of Figure skating.
I may one of few that doesn't care much about this fight. lol I will be watching of course, one of the local pubs will put on the PPV and I will head down to watch it with some friends while we have some lunch and a beer or two. I AM looking forward to the Ward VS Kovalev fight tomorrow though.
I think we need to come to this absolute: They are boxing, not fighting. Nobody knows the rules of boxing and scoring like FM. That's how FM wins, people come for his head and land on their ass because he knows how to play the game. If this is the sweet science, FM is the equivalent of Stephen Hawking. Expect Connor to try **** turning holding into grappling, maybe some head action. The reality is that they both kind of like each other and Connor won't snap and put him in the morgue. I can't count out that they want a rematch, and you suckers will pay for that too. "Oh I dunno, it was so close last time..." Meanwhile FM is pissing on hundreds to see the expression on Franklin's face.
I think it's FM & CM who have us exactly where they want us, as they are the co-creators and the driving force behind any so-called hype that some will undoubtedly dismiss this to be. I also think many Boxing & MMA fans want & have helped fuel the demand and therefore cause this fight to happen. I think the media is simply reacting to all of this and doing what they do. But as you say, that's okay, we'll watch it. As regards switching sports, I for one will respect CM as a contender, after all, he is a fighter and knows how to Box, and I always believe that when 2 men climb into a ring anything can happen. But, I feel like some athletes can do anything and accomplish the seemingly impossible. Since we are on a Ferrari website, to illustrate the point, John Surtees was World Champion on 2 wheels, and then, driving for Ferrari no less, he was World Champion on 4 wheels in 1964, two different disciplines, although both were racing. Same as this fight, two different disciplines, although both are fighting. Who knows, perhaps this will be the beginning of more Superstar Boxing vs MMA match-ups? Regardless, let's remember, both disciplines are sports, and they are a business, but, they are also entertainment. If I may be honest, for selfish reasons, I want to see this fight simply because I want to see a Boxing ringmaster perform one more time. In the same way that I'd love to see some other legendary Superstar athletes come back and perform at their peak one more time for our viewing pleasure. When you are in the presence of greatness and witnessing the very best perform, it's both exciting & humbling. Mine eyes have seen some great ones, and I just hope that night he comes with an A game. Well, that sounds like a nice way to enjoy the fight, and at the very least it ought to be entertaining! Great summation.
Absolutely and it will definitely be entertaining listening to these two characters at their press conferences in due course.
It was the most disgusting display and an embarrassing night for boxing. Andre Ward is a cheat and Tony Weeks is an incompetent referee. The low blows were so bad that a blind man could see them. Ward might as well as kicked Kovalev in the balls. Disgraceful. Lost all respect for Ward last night.
