If sheer performance is the aim how can one justify buying anything else? Even the LT will be like 1/8 price of a Chiron and the performance won't be that different to 150 mph. Mclaren just seems a generation ahead of other OEMs in terms of performance.
Yeah they got some crazy tech in the 720 and even more coming down the line. They are pushing their competitors on both ends.
My 720s arrives in march. This car is insane speed. My other mac's felt very underpowered. It was scary fast test drive. They nailed it
By the way, it matches p1 on track on some tests. Its a hyper car at super car price. Somehow I managed to order mine just below 350k. My buddy just ordered one for 390k.
That's impressive! Look forward to driving it to form my own opinion. It does trouble me that McLaren owners such as Seen through Glass and Mr JWW - that have clearly been "looked after" with all sorts of amazing McLaren experiences weren't all that gushing when they tested it. In fact they were all bordering on criticizing it. I am not trying to diminish the 720s as I simply don't know. However I would say that Ferrari intentionally made the 488 slower by limiting torque in lower gears as the full 760nm actually diminished the driving experience. I think they were right to do this, but of course this makes for a car on paper that's less impressive. Have McLaren sacrificed emotion for speed? Is the 720s a better car than the 488? Well if your the disruptor and all you make is a product that's "as good" 2 years later at a more expensive price point than the incumbent you're screwed.
I know the P1 is still rare but I wonder if the 720 will cause prices to dip a bit seeing as how the performance is on par and the tech is more advanced.
No they won't drop. Have LaF prices dropped due to 488? Carrera GT prices fallen? All of the unicorns are immune from normal market fluctuations
LAF prices have come down slightly but nothing to do with 488. 488 isn't near LAF in terms of performance. CGT is unique in how analog it is. 918 remains immune because there is no Porsche close. 720s to me seems like P1 performance, better tech and interior, lighter, $1.8mm less.....
Interesting read like this analogy Its less insistent than the Ferrari. Its like comparing a standard photograph to an over-sharpened one. The latter appears brighter, but only because its been*enhanced. https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/720s/first-drive-0 Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
That was a good read. I've driven the 720s over 2,000 miles, and just last weekend on track. It's spot on. However I think it's the 488 they're referring to that's oversharpened, it's the one with steering and brakes turned up to 11. The McLaren feels more natural to me. It's a car that just does everything well.
All the modern cars sounded anemic. The Chiron, the 488, FGT, pretty much everything was anemic. Even the porsche gt3 was super quiet which was surprising.
The exhaust on 720s was designed by ex Lambo exec who joined Mac. I thought it sounded terrific. I still purchased the sport exhaust on my 720. It's a big step forward in sound.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ1RhlWs4gE After seeing the 918 absolutely obliterate a 675LT (honestly I was surprised by how fast the 918 was in comparison to the 675LT) I hope they remake this with a 720S. It would be great to see how close it is.
Cars that cost the price of a decent home are extravagances that are only purchased for pure, unadulterated fun. No one needs them and as an investment they represent a poor choice as virtually all of them with minor exception are depreciating assets. I therefore find the constant discussion of depreciation percentages and amounts on these exotic cars somewhat perplexing. There is no argument that it is nicer to purchase the car of your choice that depreciates little in comparison to others but that fact is really only a bonus. It should be a minor consideration compared to the excitement a specific model actually affords its owner. If I was considering the 720 and the 488, for example, I would test drive each and the one that brought the biggest smile to my face is the one I would purchase, even if its value would ultimately be subject to higher depreciation. The only time deprication would be a serious consideration would be in the unlikely instance whereby both cars were judged to be of equal excitement. But that is just me.
918 has tons of mechanical grip. Does 0-200 kph in less than 7 seconds (real world) and 175ish mph in the half mile. The 675LT is around 162-164 mph in the half mile. Hence the beat down. However, the 720S because of the reduction in drag and higher power should trap around 170 mph in the half mile. This would result in a much closer race, but how close because the 918 beat the 675LT as bad as the 675LT would have beaten the AMG GTR..... It would be interesting.
In agreement when we are talking deprecation in dollars (not %) that's reasonable BUT losing over $100k in less than 18 months is not fun no matter who u are.
Sucks, but it depends how long you keep your car. The car that loses $100K in the first year only loses $150 over 5 years, so not really a big deal if you keep and use the car.
The prices for 12c's seemed to have stabilized. They fell like a rock and now seem to be staying around 120-150. Mac owners do seem to drive their cars more than F car owners, which drives down used car value. What it may mean (hard to tell now) is to wait a year on the 720s and pick up a good used one at a sizeable discount.
