France with open borders in the Eu will do what exactly about cars from neighboring countries? Think Volvo announced that all they make with be hybrids or electric. Still Ice in hybrids.
All we know for the time being is what has exactly been announced: that is the end of the sales of ICE cars on the French territory. Not the end of their circulation, nor their interdiction. Rgds
NOW... if the French REALLY wanted to shake things up, they could call for the outright banning of all gas to be sold in their country. That would really screw things up. And, it's quite possible, if not easy, to do.
I bet you do have a few, probably about teeth etc! All fair in live and war, no hard feelings mate, just channelling my inner Al Bundy
What on earth are figgy pudding? English food is typically a nice curry, or fish and chips (fried fish, such as cod, plus French fries, for those in the US)
Yes, still ICE in hybrids, you are correct. But legislation could ban ICE use in concentrated areas, and force drivers to only use electric power there. That's the whole point of the exercise; reduce pollution in towns.
Knowing France, the government can dissuade anything it wants through excessive taxation. If the price of petrol (or diesel) goes through the roof, the French will soon give up. I personally think they are on the right track to achieve a revolution, no less, in road transport.
By 2040 it's gonna happen anyway cuz electric cars will be cheaper to own than internal combustion by then
So when are these same governments going to ban filthy cargo ships and planes, that are far more damaging to the environment?
Yep. Many use cars as a status symbol ... and I'll probably get hung for saying this, but petrol is too cheap versus the full affect on our planet. Pete
Modern ships have exhaust gas scrubbers to treat the exhaust and get rid of the acid in it. They also run low NOX engines, using variable fuel injection timing. Most ships run on heavy fuel to keep costs down, but may be required to run on low sulphur fuels in protected areas. The difference in fuel costs between diesel fuel and heavy fuel is huge, so if you are willing to pay for it you can cut ships pollution tomorrow by a huge amount. A modern marine diesel is highly efficient, it utilises a lot of the waste heat in the exhaust to heat tanks, generate electric etc.
Interesting. Thanks for that. But you still see some ships belching thick black smoke, like I see on the ferries between UK and the Continent. How do they get away with that?
Usually you get a belch of smoke on start up, need to remember the weight of the thing you are trying to fire up. 450 mm pistons are common. Like a car it needs exhaust gas to turn the turbo to get the air for combustion, ferries engines run at a constant or variable speed depending on the setup, but the propellor blades change their pitch to go faster or to go astern . This loads up the engine and you have a bit of a delay getting the air from the blower. Modern engines are a big advance on the older units still about. The ones i worked on were fairly clean on the exhaust but any diesel is never going to be spotless.
Would it not be better if the surface ships worked like the submarines. By that I mean that the diesel engine would just be running at constant speed as generator, whilst the propulsion itself would be left to electric motors. This seems to have worked OK on conventional submarines for decades, and even on diesel-electric locomotives for a while.
Nope. Conventional sub are diesel-electric. They use huge batteries to power their electric motors, and charge the batteries by switching on their diesel generators when they surface. Nuclear subs run on atomic energy. That's why they have a greater under water range.
ah...my bad...did'nt know the distinction or syntax between a conventional sub and nuclear sub. Now I know.
