I don't think he meant to start, but had all the luck in the world today!

His car started to just move ever so slightly at .1 before the lights went off...I think he was actually on the verge of making the false start but the lights just went off, saving his bacon. You're allowed to move the tiny bit he did. The racing drivers rule basically is: ''If you've made a false start, don't bother braking and pulling the clutch in. Just go for it. You already have the penalty. Build as big as gap as you can before serving your penalty.

Bottas did just that, but his bacon was saved due to the lights just going off at exactly the right time.

IIRC every frame is .04 of a second, the car lifted (torque being applied) a frame or 2 before it, and was rolling a few frames after the lights went off. It registered as a perfect start, basically.

On sim racing (impossible to cheat at the start) I've made maybe a handful of such ''perfect starts''. Perfect reaction, perfect clutch slippage. The amount of ground you gain over the rest is astonishing.

Vettel's .2 start is normal, better than normal humans can do and on par with F1 drivers. .15 is truly subhuman.

Elton is like a version of Jekyll and Hyde. When things are going well he puffs up into some American rapper wannabe and when things go badly he shrinks into a British man boy.

so a standing start cars are allowed to move because adjustment to clutch bla bla bla

and its always some "tolerance" or "margin" that nobody knows in which nobody can argue about

so much BS excuse for their incompetence lol

---The FIA has explained, however, that some movement before the lights go out is allowed because of the need occasionally for drivers to make adjustments to their clutch in those crucial moments before the start.

Such a system has been in place for 20 years and has been accepted by all competitors.---

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/130639/fia-explains-why-bottas-start-was-legal

So 20 years and no team has an issue.....LOL. Moving on is a good idea!

Last race Botha's gets away with plowing into Kimi and ends up getting Second place, today he gets some "tolerance" and wins. What gives?

I didn't see a huge advantage of his start, Vettle did not have a good off the line start anyways. Good race and it's great to see Ferrari compete every race

    Exactly.

From memory you have to line up at the yellow line (with front wheel), from here a few cm of movement is allowed.

The reason we don't see cars rolling ever so slightly (which would be a big advantage if this pas possible) is quite simple: It has to be timed to absolute perfection, otherwise the clutch burns out...and you can't time it because the lights go off at random, so gambling on it will see you lose way to often!

Bottas was on the verge of a false start but was lucky, that's all there is to it. No reason for a penalty whatsoever. Had the light gone of .05 later he would've had a penalty, simple as that. It was legal.

    Something bugged me.

Why the hell was Vettel reporting to his team he thought Bottas jumped and if they heard anything about it.

RUN YOUR OWN DAMN RACE! If you are worried about his start you're not concentrating on your own.

It's normal, sometimes the stewards miss a thing it's a way of reporting. Ricciardo also said it on the radio that he thought Bottas jumped the start.

Yep, that denotes a strange state of mind when you think that reporting another driver's alleged offence will give you an advantage.

I agree that a racer should concentrate of his own race first, and let his team deal with such incident.

Vettel comes across as very *****y lately ....

I was scrolling through this thread and saw this pic. The guy on the right in the black aloha shirt is me. My son is barely visible, he's wearing Hawaiian shirt. We saw these three fans...Hamilton-Ferrari-wearing South Africans that look Indian(?) And then there's us, two haoles from Hawaii doing the shaka. Lotta things wrong in that pic, lol.

I told my son, if these fans hold the sign up and we see it on TV we need to do the Shaka and represent. No more than 5 seconds later I see the sign on the big screen. We both get up and do the Shaka. What we saw on the big screen was shot from above, I could see my son, so the angle here is bit puzzling...

I thought it was more Vettel BS until I saw that Bottas actually was moving before the lights went off. So I think Vettel deserves some credit for catching it in real time while I needed a slow motion replay to see it.

Vettel and Hamilton are behaving *****y lately and not just today; que 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix team radio highlights: Race - after the "brake check" incident.

Vettel appeared not to understand why he had been given his penalty.

“We have a ten-second stop and go penalty for dangerous driving.”
Vettel: “When did I do dangerous driving?”

Vettel: “Did you get an explanation when I did dangerous driving?”
“We speak later. Now keep your head down and mode box.”

To Perez: “Tight with Vettel, he’s serving a penalty.”

Hamilton: “A ten-second penalty is not enough for driving behaviour like that. You know that, Charlie.”

Elton is still Toto and Nikki's favorite son by far, but imagine how that could morph in only ~3 more races if Bottles is consistently ahead. Of the entire grid, Elton is perhaps the least able to cope with being beaten by his teammate, or even getting along on a professional OR personal level with a near equal teammate.

It's normal, all drivers do it, all drivers report things. Most of it doesn't get transmitted to us, only what they deem interesting to a certain degree.

RE Vettel and him forgetting he did dangerous driving: NEVER admit fault, can be used against you. Same as he did ignoring it when he walked away and Sky tried to get an interview out of him. You see he went to court a week later, could've been different outcome if he said ''yeah I did dangerous driving, so what''.
