The 488's sounded much better than the 720s at Goodwood. Much.

I know I'm going to get slammed here but in at least this color, this car is borderline ugly in these shots

I thought they sounded the same. But it's not like they're side by side so you can't compare them at the same time. Plus you have no idea what exhaust systems they are running (one could be sport vs comfort). My guess is everyone will ditch the mufflers from both of them. The 720S (not the blue one) was getting flagged on the track for too much noise, however.

Here's a decent recording, and while I loathe YouTube videos for sound comparisons, this one is better than most. Skip to 9:00 and 14:30 if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

Looked at this one today. Still worried that McLaren can't or won't manage supply and new model introductions in a way to somewhat stabilize values. I also own 488 spider and Huracan Spyder.

Well, on the plus side of good supply, you don't have to wait forever to get one or pay a premium, nor do you even have to be a good customer.

To be fair though, residuals on the 675LT and 570S/GT have been quite good/normal, P1 as well. Only the 12C/650S has ever had a depreciation problem, so in reality, most of McLaren's cars have in fact had stable values.

Perhaps....but many reviews have confirmed what I've found in person. At Goodwood they ran back to back so it was easy to compare actually. And I was at the straight so WOT.

Also saw them back to back at Goodwood - and agree that the 488 sounded much better.

Wonderful event, top notch. The lounge they set up for us was exceptional for viewing/listening to the cars. I may try to attend Revival.

    That's NOT a reason to spend $300,000

And if you lose $100,000 in one year, unless you're a Silicon Valley billionaire, that's hard to justify for 3000 miles of "driving pleasure"

Yea McLaren is doing REAL well on the residual value side of the house....

28% off MSRP after a year anyone? Any takers?

It's a different mentality. With McLaren most don't pay sticker whereas with Ferrari most pay over sticker. Both have depreciation. Net-net the experience is quite similar.

Well, that's what happens when you add $80K in options to a car. Add $80K of dumb options to a 488 and let us know how it goes. Hell, I can't even think of the last time I saw a 488 with $80K in options.

The reality is that while a $265K car is selling for $190K, so is a $220K car. The extra $45K in CF-everything and MSO options do not hold value obviously.

    Here's a 4K mile car with a $218K sticker asking $185K:

Can you point to any McLaren other than 12C/650S that lost $100K in one year?

The residual trend has been vastly different the last few years and models. I expect 720S to continue the trend of a more normal depreciation curve.

Isn't 2 enough? You seem to be making my argument for me.

Let's talk about "normal depreciation" as you brought up.

Point of fact the 720s will be their bread and butter highest selling car like the 2 you mention. The specialty cars are the ones that have been exempt from massive depreciation in the first year.

If they follow that curve, look for a great deal one year to 18 months on.

Well, I guess you can ignore the trend and based your opinions of a 2017 McLaren that's very well received on a 2011 McLaren that wasn't terribly well received... I mean, if you want to do that, go ahead I guess.

And it wasn't two, it was more like one. 12C/650S are borderline the same car. They're barely any different, thus it's not hard to imagine 650S depreciation was similar.

The Paris Blue 720S had standard exhaust; sports exhaust option can be identified visually by vented tips. I don't find that color to be flattering for this car. My personal favorite is Glacier White.

720s won't be their highest selling car. The 570S and 570S spider will be. This depreciation issue seems to be the key counter argument for brand (and sound but that has been corrected with 720 which I have order on - exhaust design by ex Lambo exec who now works for Mac). Irrespective of some 570S on internet, they have held well and many have real driving miles. My bud sold his for 215k on an early 2016 car and mine will be sold for something south of this when my 720 arrives. Everyone should hold off on predicting depreciation until a year into 720s. The dep curve has become flatter since the 12C/650 biff. That said, too much focus on cars that will never be investments. Some may depreciate quicker and flatten (i.e. 12C) and some may be slow to depreciate and like steepen in time (F12 and likely 488). Right now, the brand only sits with 570 (gt, coup and spider) and 720s and P1. In a couple of years you get a spider 720 follow by an LT version. That's really it.

If the 720s isn't their biggest seller (like the 488 and it's replacement will be for Ferrari), then they shoot line up the Marketing people at McLaren against a wall and shoot them.

It's a 350k to over 400k priced car. Not sure what you mean by "biggest seller" but from a volumetric standpoint, the sports series (I.e. 570) will outpace the super series (I.e. 720)...if you are referring to margins, then the 720s will edge out. When you refer to "biggest seller", that alludes to volumes, not margins. 720 will be much smaller volumes.

It's going to compete with the 488 or it's replacement. That's Ferrari's number one seller. The California is not even though its cheaper and more of a GT, like the 570s

If they went through all of this and not have it the focus of their sales, they've made a huge mistake. They need to sell about 2000-2500 of these a year. I don't see those kind of numbers with the 570s.

Pretty sure they will achieve those figures with 570s. Think they are projecting over 4k cars in total for 2017 across lines. A lot of this I would think comes from 570 but I could be wrong
