LA to the Bay area and return-- everyday!

BBC - Capital - The man who takes a plane to work every day

Curt von Badinski, a mechanical engineer and co-founder of a San Francisco-based tech company, has a six-hour daily commute from Los Angeles – most of it by plane.

Five days a week, he rises at 05:00 for the 15-minute drive to Bob Hope Burbank airport, for a 90-minute flight to Oakland, located 353 miles (568km) north west. For a monthly fee of $2,300, he can access unlimited flights on a single-engine turboprop airplane.

Having undergone a background check, von Badinski can bypass the main terminal, skip any usual security procedures and board the plane within minutes of parking

Von Badinski gets to the office by 08:30 and leaves by 17:00, allowing time for busy traffic on his drive back to Oakland airport to catch his return flight at 19:15. He is home in Burbank shortly after 21:00.

“The way I justify a six-hour commute is having the ability to have all the things that I want," he explains.

“I am always excited to start the day."

The picture shows him getting into a Pilatus PC-12NG offered by SurfAir.

At least as a passenger he gets to work some of those 6 hours every day.

Reminds me of a disc jockey who had a morning show on a Chicago radio station and an evening show on a station in DFW (or perhaps I have those reversed). He used to travel round trip each day between the two cities on American Airlines, where he had a special pass paid for by the two radio stations. He also had special security clearances and dedicated ground transportation arrangements to allow this to happen.

There were several engineer/scientists who commuted to Los Alamos National Lab every day (more likely most days) from Santa Fe and Albuquerque. With the weather we have here, possible a very large percentage of the time.

My sister knows a commercial pilot that commutes from his home airport to LAX (I believe it's LAX) in his small plane. If I remember right, he lives in one of those fly in communities south of LA. She told me, but I forget where he parks it at LAX. It may have been in one of his airline's hangars or something.

That's still a terrible commute even though he's not the one flying. I used to commute via MARC train from BWI to DC's Union Station everyday and it was about 2 hours roundtrip depending on delays and whether I caught an express train. Yeah I could get some work done or sleep, but I rather be at the desk or at my house to to get work or relaxation. Now I walk to work (5 minutes) and it's the best thing ever.

I knew of a guy in the 80's who worked at Hawthorne field in LA and flew home to Catalina Island every day. I used to see his plane fly overhead. But that's only like 30 miles or so.

    600 is a bit different!

In the 50's, there was a small "airline" (Cutter-Carr) that did nothing but fly people to/from Los Alamos from Kirtland/Sandia Bases in Albuquerque.
They flew Bonanzas and Twin Bonanzas (or maybe Travel Airs) only. Were Red & White.

Flew over 5-6 times a day.

And Sante Fe to Los Alamos is only about a 40 minute drive. Add an hour for Albuquerque to Los Alamos.

Seems like hell to me. I thought this was going to be a story about someone who lives out by Ontario somewhere and commutes to Santa Monica by Cessna 172. That would be okay, but not this.

He needs to leave his desk two hours before his flight leaves! He might be better off taking Southwest.

Can not talk airfields, but in the late nineties,we had an American dentist staying with us in UK for the international FITASC (clay shooting) championships. He told me that he had a practice in LA and in SF,and flew himself between the two in a twin.

I thought the same thing. He's still spending a TON of time commuting. It's not like the he's walking out to this garage hangar, firing up the old Cessna and puttering around for 30 minutes.

Down in my neck of the woods, there was a story in the early 1970s about a guy who commuted from Charlottesville, VA to NYC by Lear Jet. He supposedly worked as a specialist on the NYSE. Guess computers have relegated specialists to the way of the milk man.

I worked for a hotel in Lubbock, TX in college and part of my duties was airport runs to collect pilots. We had a contract with DHL who positioned aircraft at LBB over the weekend.

One pilot I became friendly with, would leave his Mooney at LBB so that he could get home and back while the other pilots were stuck in our hotel for the weekend.

Since I always knew he was gone for sure, as personally I took him to the airport Friday AM and picked him up Sunday night, that meant there was always an empty room in the hotel, even on big Texas Tech football weekends. I sometimes used that flexibity to maintenance issues or over-booking problems.

Funny, right after I post in this thread, one of my salespeople came to me and said...

"I just made an easy sale, I called out to the guy on the number he left us over the weekend, and when I called he said 'make it quick, I'm flying an aircraft. How much. .... Ok call me in 45 minutes, I'll be at my office and I'll give you my credit card number'."
