Have you done any analysis of the qv engine? I would love to know what could be done to push power higher, esp if there is a particular limiting factor ie exhaust port size/shape.
    cheers

One of the key requirements to the analysis is knowing how the cylinder heads and intake system perform on the flow bench. When I ported my heads I was able to get that data. Unfortunately I do not have that data for a four valve head. I would also have to update my analysis for four valves. Right now it only does two valves, although it should not be that hard to update. If you have a four valve head I would be willing to put it on the flow bench.

    Cheers Jim

I'm going to try and get the flow of a qv measured, hopefully without dismantling my engine and sending it across the pond!
    If/once I have a measurement I'll supply them.

Cool article released March 17, 1984. Its not often you find a good test for the 5000S. Most journalists got cars which had relatively new engines that needed to be broken in.

    0-60 in 4.8
    0-100 in 11.3
    1/4 in 13.2?

Top of the heap in 1984 as far as I know.

There is a reason for this rather exceptional LP500S performance.

This car as tested is Barry Robinson's famed ZA9C0050LA12550, delivered to him on June the 6th 1983. Barry had Nuova Automobili Lamborghini SpA blueprint & tune the engine to a reported 425 bhp* up from the standard 375 bhp of a production LP500S.

    * Robinson reported that the car was developing closer to 440 bhp as measured by his race shop.

FWIW Nuova Automobili Lamborghini SpA would tune Countachs for anyone if they asked for it and were willing to pay. Its performance also underscores Downdraft performance numbers.

Therefore, as tested in the March 17th 1984 issue of MOTOR magazine, this car's results are simply because its a lot more potent than a standard LP500S.

I posted about this car in the Downdraft thread as its performance underscores is that of the 455 bhp or 470 bhp Downrdaft.

FWIW, on the 15th of October 1983, in appalling wet weather, Barry Robinson & Alex Postan set 12 British speed & endurance records for production cars with this Countach LP500S, lapping Vauxhall's Millbrook test track at 180mph for extended periods. I am made to understand that terminal velocity achieved by this car was 186 mph.

Here below is the cover for this issue, with ZA9C0050LA12550 sporting it's famed Barry Robinson personalized BR 33 plates.

And, here is the same LP500S cooking the airport runway @ Bembridge on the Isle of Wight in a Supercar shootout.

Barry replaced this car with one of the first Downdrafts delivered to a customer.

Very cool. Besides the differential between the two cars in torque it's a good indication of top end performance for the DD. I found another article in my boxes where the journalist clocks a DD at no less than 188. Some other cool details, I'll post it later.

Sure about the VIN? I thought that the 8th digit is a letter like C,D,E,F...? like CLA12480 for example.

I was thinking the same thing but I see the auctioneers have it as I do https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21906/lot/352/ , perhaps we stand corrected but the last five digits of this famed 1983 Countach LP500S are definitely 12550.

A quick bit of further research tells me it should be "CLA".

Automobile Magazine Nov 1986. Ingegnere Ceccarani explains to Mel Nichols the details of the FI Countach. Lamborghini had previously taken another example up to 290 kph at Nardo.

    0-100 10.8 seconds
    1/4 13 flat

These figures make sense given the restrictions placed on the US car. I'd wager it'd do some damage with an exhaust and loss of EPA reqs.

Ceccarani commented that Lamborghini was very pleased with the performance of the car. The car pulled hard to 7500 rpm with room for 7,800 rpm. (It's noted that 8,000 rpm would be the max if it were allowed)

There were lots of other interesting points brought up in the article. Cool read overall. Something Mel noticed was the starter sound on the Countach. I've always thought the starter motor on the CT/LM etc sound amazing. The whine is so iconic IMO.
