Yesterday at my place of business, I had the occasion to meet and have a wonderful conversation with a lovely lady who is the wife of a former Formula 1 driver.

We were talking about F1 in general, when she began telling me funny little anecdotes about various drivers. I then (regrettably) asked her if she had any information on the condition of my favorite driver, MS. Suddenly, her entire cheerful demeanor instantly changed and her eyes welled up with tears. She then composed herself and stated, "MS is a very close friend of our family." She then added, "We don't talk about it."

I apologized for asking and she composed herself and we continued on with our conversation.

Take it for what it's worth but the encounter told me all that I need to know about Michael's condition.

There was no, "He's coming along" etc, etc. Just a show/reaction of pure sadness and sorrow.

    What a tragedy.

Damn, that's horrible. Ruined the day for me, terrible for such an innocuous accident to have such a devastating effect

Treating brain injuries is a black science as far as I'm concerned.

Yea fellas it ruined my whole day. I was hoping that she would have said that he's coming along etc.

I can't say who she is but trust me when I tell you that she is from Michael's inner circle

This is very sad but it's not very surprising. Surely if there were any good news at all the family would have let the public know, notwithstanding their understandable obsession with privacy.

It was a very disturbing turn of events, and it continues to be very very sad. I hope one day we get to see him up, walking and talking, and he never gives up. Best wishes to his family

    Keep fighting Michael.

You were just confirming the obvious to most of us. No news at all in those cases is bad news. What we don't know is where in the 'bad' news spectrum he is. Bed-ridden and unconscious? Conscious and walking but not remembering anything? Paralyzed but fully aware of everything? Now that I'm battling cancer (and not winning so far), and fighting like hell to live longer, I personally would not want to live under any of the above assumed scenarios, especially this long. And in fact, told my wife I do not want to be resuscitated, kept in a ventilator, etc. Not worth it to me, but even if it was, I would never do that to my family. But to each his own, of course. He might have never expressed his desires in that regard, and that'd be a shame. That's why, in his name, we all should take care of doing that (living will, even if just verbal), because you never know when something like that could happen to us.

Jeez, man, sorry to hear that. I'm in the exact same boat, and know exactly how you are thinking about it. I too have already made it very clear that once I am not in control of my dignity, switch me off or shoot me, either way, I don't want to go further.

Keep fighting mate, cancer is a ***** but it has its weaknesses. I was ****ed before xmas, and really couldn't see me lasting long, but I'm still here, and the pain levels are a tenth what they were and that's down to a positive mind set and, I think, the right balance of medication and diet, your body rewards you for taking in and out the right stuff.

Mom passed away of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia when I was 17('85) at Wadley Cancer Research Institute in Dallas...at the time thats what it was called. Now all too well about what this type of cancer can do to a person and to a family. I would'nt want to wish it upon anyone else as it is terminal...no cure still. I emphathize and symphathize with mercy killing as she was not the same person going in when she spent her final months on her bed with 100cc's of morphine drip a day. In a way looking back, I was mad at God for taking her away but looking back now I am happy she died instead of suffering even more. She is in Gods hands now and sometimes the Lord is selfish that way in that he takes away the closest ones away from us, at times too early to do his work up in the heavens. She is lucky that she is with him and she died under his terms. I know tech. and medicines have come along way since then, all I can say is hang in the fight, don't let cancer consume you, you consume it in how you live.

Awful mate..... know the feeling, my mum passed from what I have now, at the same age (47) which is how I originally self diagnosed it when the docs were still trying to tell me I had indigestion, irritable bowel etc and all the other things they wanted to try to tell me it was

I have never made the difference that Michael and those like him do. We lose so many of the greatest people around us, it's a real shame. Old age and death we can understand, but when they leave us so young, it's very unfair

Sorry to hear about your battle, but I feel the same. I would not like to live the rest of my life as a vegetable, for lack of a better word. I've even told my friends that if I'm ever on my death bed, for them to drop some LSD on my tongue so i can go out on a good one.
