But the math doesn't take in account Bottas crashing into Raikkonen in Spain (taking him out in the process), it doesn't account for Bottas crashing into Raikkonen in Baku, and Raikkonen taking out by the Force India's in the same race, the brake failure in Canada...

 

I think the turbo might of what lead the rather low end. Now if they replace it with a brand new one it mwill help them. Problem is that causes grind penalties due ot the fact they are right now at the edge towards the penalties though the new turbo may allow them to set off the line quickier allow in the grid penalty to be negated somewhat. Problem is it enough to help them? I don't think so unless the engine gets replaced (again) for a new better version but all those are ifs and non of them are definite.

 

Damn, no way Ferrari can win WDC (WCC is gone already) with that performance difference. Must be a bit of an uplift to enter the summer break in the lead, but 1 freaking point is hardly a lead, especially with those guys. Hopefully Ferrari has something up its sleeve than MB can't match, or it'll be game over yet again. Will be crossing fingers here. The good news, is Ferrari is the best 'loser', but I know it's no consolation for them. Or us. He he.

 

Well, this was a track for damage limitation and they were doing reasonably well... until those punctures in the last laps.

Well they gotten way more points than Mclaren this season. And have finished most of the time ahead of Mclaren. Anyway they're a new team and it's American so expect some American show to have some bias to a team that is American.

 

I'm all for 'em and feel they've gotten a fair amount of coverage for a semi-Ferrari sub- team. I'll "expect" more only when they earn it.

McLaren's steeped in history. F1, Can Am, Indy car, and sportscar. Yes, the persistent coverage of it's present fall from grace is deserved.

 

Both Vettel and Raikkonen's tires where within Pirelli's recommended window.

As a massive Kimi fan I fully endorse Ricciardo taking Kimi's seat when he leaves, whenever that may be. In fact Ricciardo is my favourite driver to take THAT seat in particular. When Vettel leaves (whenever THAT is) Verstappen must take his.

That said, I think Verstappen should stay with Red Bull as I believe they'll be in a stronger position than Ferrari next year.

This is very much depending on Renault making progress with their PU; but then, team Renault itself could become a serious contender in future.

 

One race does not a championship make. Two unfortunate tire issues in the waning laps. Last race Botha's was one lap from being overtaken.

The WCC may be favored by Merc but the WDC is up for graps, by any of the top three.

 

Of course...I am putting a lot of faith in Renault. All new engine so who knows...Surely by what they've learned (and with 3 teams running the engines) they'll know what to do.

Renault could become a contender again also by RBR has superior drivers and a superior development team. I'd rule Renault out for a championship run until at least 2020.

That said Renault is keen to move themselves up to #4 and beat Williams, Force India and potentially Mclaren if it sorts itself out next year. By being in the #4 spot they can content for the odd podium here and there. They have a great driver in Hulkenberg and shouldn't struggle finding another good driver alongside him.

I'm impressed with Red Bull's rate of development. Absolutely nowhere in the beginning of the season...Newey back full time now I believe after he's mostly done playing with Aston Martin's and sailing boats.

I wish it were true, but at the moment it's bleak. Until ferrari starts to stop resting on small updates they should concentrate on trying to extract more power from the engine and continue on until hugely enough to surplus Mercs by a wide magin. Right now it's way off.

 

That's also the timescale I have in mind.

I don't think Hulkenberg is WDC material.

They need somebody else to lift the team up.

Again this story??? It is not like before every season the top team is calling the best drivers and offer them a ride for this year. It is not as Mercedes called Lewis thinking he was the only one on the grid to get the job done...
A lot is a question of luck and timing! When Lewis joined Mercedes he was not happy at McLaren anymore and so he was willing to leave. Alonso by that time was still convinced to fullfill his dream to get a WDC with the Scuderia and Seb was sitting in the winning car so why would one of them leave. Or do you think Vettel should have left RB after winning his third WDC because within two years he would get a car to get at least 2 more? This is like folding a pair of aces in poker, not very likely to pay off but if you are right it is the move of the century...
Lewis was the only one of them being free at exactly the right time. It is not like Lewis had the foresight of calling Mercedes by his own because he was convinced that this would be his chance to win further WDC in a complete dominant car.
I do not say that Lewis came in this car undeserved but it was partly because the timing was simply right for him and neither for Alonso or Vettel.
