I live in a fairly large expensive home, as Im sure many of you do. When someone comes to our house to quote me for landscaping bid, to paint a room, to replace tile in the bathroom, anything around the house, I just know that the vendors are going to raise their price a bit because hey- he's a rich guy, he lives in a big house he can afford it. its the cost of doing business I guess. You get multiple bids but you expect someone somewhere is going to screw you cause they think you just like to piss away money.

Owning a Ferrari, I expected the same. On the roof of my car, someone in a parking lot had scratched the roof. Not sure how it got there, but I figured I would take it to the body shop recommended by the Ferrari dealer to get it repaired. I figured since it was a Ferrari, whatever they quoted me it was going to be inflated. It wasnt terrible but some scratches in the clear coat.

Regardless, I went down and was told to fix it properly, they would have to repaint the whole roof. Seriously??? I mean you can barely see the defect in the paint. Its just a few swirl marks. Yes sir, we have to repaint the whole thing and do it right. We only do it right. Fine, I said, give me a quote.

Im thinking this is going to set me back a few grand- and in my mind was cursing whoever did this to my car. I get the estimate back.

    Wait for it.....

    $13,000.

    WTF????/

$13,000!!!! They wanted to remove the windshield and replace it because when they remove the windshield, it will break.

Wait a minute, I thought you were going to just repaint the roof....now we are replacing the windshield? Why? Well- to do it right sir- we have to take off the windshield. But its a few swirl marks- can hardly see it. doesnt matter, we remove the windshield and likely when we remove it it will break so the 13k includes the replacement windshield.

Oh geez- how thoughtful of you to include that in the 13k estimate. I mean, Im stupid but Im not an idiot. I asked the forum here and some locals recommended Finishing Touch in Fountain Hills. Checked out their website and they had a bunch of Ferraris they had worked on, including an F40. I figured they cant be all that bad. I went there today, the guy buffed out the swirl marks in 5 minutes and paint is perfect. Charged me a fraction - I mean I was going to pay him double what he wanted. They refused. Said it was an easy fix.

I ordered pizzas for the entire shop and having them delivered tomorrow as a thank you.

So the Ferrari tax is alive and well. I have no problem spending money when it needs to be spent. But this was just a rip off plain and simple. Thank you to the forum for the suggestion of Finishing Touch. Highly recommended from this Fchatter.

Talk to a trusted dealer. My local dealer is very reasonable, much much cheaper than my Porsche dealer. Depending on the scratch but shouldn't be more than a couple hundred if not cheaper.

Why don't you tell us the gouging body shop so we can steer clear?

Ironically I had the exact same thing happen with my 458. I think in my case it was bird poo. Premier, which is one of the best around said $11,000 4 years ago, including replacing the windshield. So I called my insurance, paid my deductible, and had it taken care of.

The icing on the cake was that when I sold the car. I took a $20k hit because the car had a CarFax against it. Lesson learned! Could of had it fixed perfectly for under $1000 and nobody would have know the difference.

You need to find a good design build contractor who will work open book at an agreed upon overhead and profit for your house related construction.

Ferrari tax is definitely alive and well. The fact that someone would even suggest to remove the windshield makes me more leery of them than ever. Why would someone for some extra dollars make an owner of a Ferrari go through such extreme measures? 👎🏼:(

I was one of those that recommended Finishing Touch. I have had my 360 worked there and my other two cars had some work as well. They do excellent work at a very fair price.

When they suggested repainting the roof- I specifically asked about the hit on the car fax. So glad to have avoided all this.

That was very nice of you to buy pizzas for the shop! I'm sure they'll appreciate it. I like stories like this. I know it's only a few pizzas, but it shows that you care about people. Your parents raised you right. You've inspired me!

The irony of this is the original Ferrari paint wasn't much better than your average body shop anyway.

I say this to people who repaint their front bumpers and are worried about "depreciation". The answer is --- the new paint is better than what came from the factory so it should be worth MORE.

Is the fit on car fax from repainting or replacing the windshield? Or both?

The only way to avoid a carfax is to pay cash for any and all repairs. Once you get insurance involved it gets reported and crushes your resale value.

At 13 grand out of pocket, it might be worth it.

But your point is well taken. Carfax is a blessing and a curse.

Having just replaced my windshield from a rock chip, I guess that applies to me now, good thing I'm planning on keeping my 458.

Thank you Rick. It was the least I could do to show appreciation. We need to support more businesses like this. A great team with great service.

Agree. There is nothing special about the Ferrari paint. I kept reading about all these people doing paint correction to a brand new Ferrari. Never made sense till today.

Irony is that if it was a honda- same repair would have been 1500 max!

Two years ago, I received a quote from a Ferrari authorized bodyshop in my area to repaint the entire car, 458 Italia, in its original color (not a special paint): giallo modena for $5,500. I thought it was reasonable because of the labor involving with taking apart so many body panels. The job would take 5-7 days. This bodyshop is also the authorized Lambo, AM, and McLaren cars. So, just the roof for $13,000 seems highway robbery.

About the same time, my yard maintenance guy used to charge me $45 for mowing my lawn for years. After seeing the Ferrari in my garage, he raised the price to $75 the following month. I confronted him with the increase and his response was that since I drove a Ferrari, I could afford it. I fired the SOB on the spot. This kind of mindset should never be tolerated: taking advantage of people, no matter rich or poor, is a moral crime.

Glad you ended up with the best possible solution.

Whenever possible I negotiate rates ahead of any contractor visiting my house for this very reason. It's not always possible but it often is. My neighbors all provide each other with our own web of known vendors/contractors that don't gouge.

similar situation when I was getting a clearbra quote...I said F430 and the guy on the phone thought it was a ford pick up truck, I clarified that it was a Ferrari F430 and he came back with double the price lol.

This is why I don't insure my car. Why pay for insurance you won't use?

You at a minimum need liability insurance but I think there is some merit in what you are saying.

The insurance is so cheap, I think i pay $1000 a year or so, that it would come in handy in case of a catastrophic accident where the entire car is totaled.

But yeah- I agree with you- its kind of a waste cause no one is going to use it for minor repairs. I even contemplated paying for the 13k roof repaint out of pocket had I decided to go that route.
