Ricciardo is a truly delightful character. Hand on heart, probably the nicest guy to race in F1 since I've been watching (so ~20 years). But facts are facts, and there's no shame in it, to be only marginally slower then one of the greater talents to race in F1

Max needs a bit more patience. Winning is never a certainty. He is so young to be so upset to the point Jos steps into this now...again.

--Max Verstappen's situation at Red Bull will become "more complicated" if they do not provide him with a winning car in 2018, his father Jos Verstappen has said.

The 19-year-old has been hampered by unreliability this season and has finished only half of the 10 races, claiming one podium.

Amid rumours of a move to Ferrari, Jos confirmed to Sky F1 in Austria that his son would remain at Red Bull next season but has now hinted they may seek a move for 2019 if Red Bull

"Max wants to become a champion and he will do anything to win," Jos was quoted as telling RTL GP.

"Right now he does not have such an opportunity, but he uses this year to become stronger.

"Next year, it is clear what our goals are. We want to win, and if this does not happen, the situation will become more complicated.

"At the moment Max cannot do anything. He is doing everything right, and he feels good in his skin, but he just wants to win.

"That's what you notice about Max. The disappointment that he cannot win, which is why he has had some problems. He has never experienced [not winning] before." (Full story - external site) Via SKY F1 Gossip

Max on being aggressive on track: "On the track you have to be an *******! Look at Michael Schumacher! At the end of the day, a F1 driver needs to know how to win races and titles, not how to be a nice guy"

The bonus is Max has a far keener sense of humour than Michael did at the same age.
Michael was almost TOO serious when he started.

+1 I can see how people hated him, he really was pretty morbid until his latter years (post silverstone 99 or maybe 2000 after he won the title). Especially in his 2nd come back he was so chilled out, a completely different character.

When I was little and started to follow F1 all I saw was the races nothing else, so didn't have a clue on how he was back then. When I was older and saw more, I was already a Ferrari fan and Schumacher fan so for me I never saw his earlier ''robot'' side.

Max can come off as a bit arrogant at times but willing to forgive him considering his age. He really is the future.

Excuse me, but there were many champions who weren't @@@@@@@@ and there are still some to come. You can win a title cleanly and being respected by all the grid.

    Verstappen apologised with Dutch beer

Max Verstappen said sorry with a bottle of Dutch beer after punting his Red Bull teammate out of the Hungarian GP.

Daniel Ricciardo was furious after the crash, swearing about the 19-year-old on the radio and showing him the middle finger as he returned to the paddock.

But Verstappen's growing reputation for being a self-proclaimed "a--hole" did not extend to the area of apologies, with Ricciardo confirming that they spoke before leaving Budapest.

And De Telegraaf newspaper reports that the apology took place fuelled by a peace offering in the form of two bottles of Dutch beer, delivered personally by Verstappen.

"Did I drink both beers? What do you think?" Verstappen said.

And Australian Ricciardo told Germany's Auto Bild: "Max apologised to me and took the blame 100 per cent. I accept the apology so I'm done with it, but it's impossible to change what happened anyway."

Red Bull officials also backed Ricciardo and Verstappen to patch things up, although Dr Helmut Marko thought Max's FIA penalty was too harsh.

"It was an overly severe punishment, but this may have something to do with the past when he was impetuous," he said.

You mean like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Mika Hakkinen, Jenson Button, for example ?

I have never heard of them having to barge into other cars to make a place, and they were quite correct on the track with their opponents.

That "tough guy" bull**** is just a sign of impatience, lack of control or bad manner.

You can claim he's crashed into a driver when he's done it on purpose. I don't consider a lock up ''barging into someone to gain a place''.

It's not his first time, is it?

Didn't he crowded the Ferrari at the first corner last year at Spa?
There has been other instances of crazy first laps from Max; completely unnecessary.
Being fast and spectacular isn't an excuse.

MAx should see that some of his moves are not going to come off, but he doesn 't seem to care.
Motor racing isn't a do or die thing; you have also to use your brain and be there at the end.

In my book, Verstappen is building a bad reputation as a reckless driver.
I am surprised some want him at Ferrari.
    Ricciardo is far more polished.

Wait a second, first you go on about ''barging into others'' and now it's crowding that's included? At Spa last year he had the full right to be where he was. What was actually stupid that race was after the red flag, he had red mist and was extremely aggressive towards Kimi and Vettel, as he was under the impression that they hit him.

F1 is extremely difficult to overtake still, due to the wake of the cars. At Hungary even moreso. He also doesn't have a fast car, it's underpowered. He generally qualifies around 5th-6th place, so his only real chance of making a spot up is being aggressive. Don't blame him for it, Ricciardo had the same game plan of being aggressive on the first lap and not making any friends!

Ricciardo doesn't drive like Verstappen, he is more circumspect and doesn't get into trouble. He is a more accomplished driver, IMO.

Max charges, arrives too fast, locks wheels and expects to go through; but it doesn't work like that. Then he claims it was a racing incident. Yes, I blame him for Spa last year; Kimi had to swerve to avoid what could have been a serious accident.

Max should know that a race is hardly won on the first lap, but easily lost there.
