208 GT4 matching numbers?

    At your Ferrari dealer with some €€€ !

    There no Ferrari really " matching number"
    Only the factory can certify that your car with that VIN have that engine with this number.
    No Ferrari with S/N 123456 fitted with engine N° 123456

    It depends what you mean exactly by "matching numbers".

    The truly "identical matching numbers" practice ended when the factory started production of the V8 cars. The "Enzo era" V-12s usually had the same numbers for chassis, engine and gearbox, i.e if chassis was numbered, let's say 17777, then the original engine was also 17777, and the transmission 17777 too.

    This stopped with the V-8 cars (308GT4, 208GT4, 308GTB/GTS etc...) simply because there were too many different versions of:
    a) the cars, depending on the market of destination: "standard Euro LHD", "Euro-UK RHD", American LHD, Australian RHD, Japan LHD (yes, LHD for Japan), etc...
    b) the engine: 3-litres wet sump, 3-litres dry sump, 3-litres wet sump with catalysator, 2-litres wet sump, etc...

    Also "Dinos" (308GT4 and 208GT4) had chassis numbered with even numbers, and the two seaters with odd numbers, whereas the 308GT4 and 308GTS used basically the same engine variant (wet sump model); this would have complicated further the matching of cars and engine number.

    So the numbers of the chassis, engine and trans were not identical any more, but there is, of course, and nevertheless an original engine for your car and an original transmission.

    For instance, my 1989 328 GTB is chassis #81085, engine 17330, transmission 3916F106MB.
    These are the original engine and transmission fitted in the car by the factory.

    If you want to know if your car still has its original engine and transmission, and if the original numbers as fitted in the car by the factory at construction are not in your documentation, then your only solution is to ask either the importer if it is still there and still has the archive; or the Ferrari factory, but this will cost you money.
