Surprised that Ferrari didn't do a facelift for the Cali T this time. Maybe a 3 year cycle for the Cali series since it's Ferrari's top seller and they don't want to produce too many of each series that it dilutes the brand?

    2009-2011 original Cali
    2012-2014 Cali 30 (?)
    2015-2017 Cali T
    2018- Portofino?

The cali got its "facelift" in the Cali T. They usually only do 1 facelift (better known as the "mid-life model update"), then bring the "whole new car":

    360 to 430
    550 to 575
    458 to 488
Cali to Cali T (cali 30 was not considered substantial enough to be the mid-life model update)

It was time for a "whole new car", not a mid-life model update. I don't think anyone should be surprised by this progression, this was a given/known, no?

The Cali T is a very nice design. This Portofino seems ok. It seems to be brutalism as applied to automobile design...

I agree. Next we'll have the 6 cylinder Pisa. Or Venezia. Or Roma. As obvious an Italian reference as possible. One could survey south Florida housing developments (Tuscany, in many cases) or local "Italian" restaurants for future model names. How about a 2 stroke "Olive Garden" for the US market?

Visually great improvement over the California - probably in all other ways as well.
So glad I cancelled my 2017 Cali that would have been delivered about a month ago after I was assured that there would be only "minor tweaks" to the 2018 version.

I feel badly for those that believed Ferrari's statements to the contrary and took delivery.
The significant drop in lease residuals around March 2017 was the first clue.

Each their own, but I am not with you on this one.
The Portofini is not a bad looking design at all. It's just that it's Jag F Type nice, not gotta have it sexy.

This is a tough crowd. A lot of car designer experts.

I personally think the changes look awesome.

    Excited to see more.

I like the Portofino, clearly differentiated to the California but not too extreme. Performance capabilities seems to be more than enough. Well done Ferrari!

If I remember me to the design study of 2015, everything ok with the new baby Ferrari.

They can't recycle old same names forever though, Portofino is the Montecarlo of Liguria, next model probably will called Montecarlo, the car matters, the name comes second

I like it a lot, which usually doesn't happen when I see a new model for the first time.

In my mind it's a question if one has a minimum feeling what's the history of the brand. Actually no one has it in Maranello. Look at Superfast, GTC4/Lusso (two different cars in the past) and so on. Rumors says there will be a GTO coming soon... As what, a predecessor of which car, 250 GTO, 288 GTO, 599 GTO? Just remember, the 'O' stands for 'Omologato'. But ok, who cares in the new markets...
Why not keeping the name California (as bad as it was at the beginning) to have this little 'tradition' alive, esp. for the customers who own one?
But we are heading towards a SUV that the Ferrari world is in desperate need of. So tradition is not very important for Mr. M., money talks.

It is, just google 'Ferrari 250 California'
But ok, this is history, nearly 60 years ago. Not very easy to remember.

Every Cali characteristics a little bit more exaggerated designed, modern, clererly differntiated, but still a very classic aero concept. In comparison to the Cali the Portofino has not one additional aero-feature, Ferrari was in this respect very cautious.

I mean that the US state with the name California had nothing to do with Ferrari, the company, yet they named one of their models after said state back in the day. Why is Portofino a lesser name then?

I like it rather a lot more than I thought I would. The back especially reminds me of some one-off specials. Similar to the F60 America in some way.

Again, never really jelled with the Cali as the back was just plain ugly but this one for some reason works. I like it. If I don't end up buying a Speciale again this could fit my needs.

I like the profile with the roof up. The rear is nice too but reminds me too much of the new Aston Zagato.

The state California has something to do with naming the 250... The brand itself doesn't.
'Madonna di Campiglio' sounds spectacular for our SUV.
