LOL if you seriously don't think Hamilton has a BIG say in who his teammate will be. How can you be so naive?

Also I have news for you but every successful F1 driver in history has been political. Some are more outward about it than others.

The fact that you people honestly think no team wants Fernando Alonso is ****ing hilarious. Hell, McLaren who he "OMG BADMOUTHED ON THE RADIO" would welcome a new deal for him with open arms. It's Alonso that is calling the shots to leave, not the other way around.

Apparently some people don't know that Alonso is already driving for McLaren.

That's hilarious (no expletive needed) !

Autosport reporting McLaren Honda divorce could be finalised this weekend with switch to Renault.

    I hope it's true.

The Renault power unit may not be the best, but it will be miles better than the Honda.

McLaren could climb back midfield again, on the strength of his chassis and more reliable engine.

Mind you, Verstappen could have something to say about Renault's reliability !

Renault are not the best PU this year, but they are improving. The RB isn't the fastest on power circuits, but it can at least win races on handling circuits so the engine isn't that far off. We know the McLaren has a great chassis, so there is no reason to think they can't be up there with RB challenging for podiums and wins. As long as McL can get the same engine spec as RB it's got to be the best outcome for them.

Remember, this engine formula gets ripped up soon, so all teams will get a PU reset when that happens. There just isn't time for Honda to get their engine working reliably and be the most powerful too. McL have to act now.

As for Verstappen - he is clearly unlucky this year and I expect Renault to build a more reliable PU for next year. It is also clear that Alonso is better at managing the car and taking care of it.

    Just to correct you there:

Alonso has been very careful not to "badmouth" McLaren as a team, and has in fact gone out of his way to praise the teams efforts under difficult circumstances- His "badmouthing" has always been aimed squarely at Honda.

Take a look at his comments and interviews: He has always said that the chassis is right up there with Mercedes and Ferrari, if not better, but then states that it is the power-unit that is letting the team down.

McLaren as a team have Alonso's full support - Honda on the other hand, do not!

Yep. He seems to be quite content in the team. Without RD there he seems to be running the show.

But if Honda calls it quit, would McLaren be able to afford paying Fernando's salary?

If Mac switch to Renault then that sets up a whole series of problems. Like, how well is Renault going to supply all the teams AND their own? And where is McLaren going to get the money after the Honda gravy train ends?

To be honest with you, I think its a mistake. They should work it out with Honda and dump Alonso but Zak Brown is an idiot.

    Latest Fernando rumors:

Fred goes to Williams as Papa Stroll pays for him to help mentor his baby driver.

The rumor has it that Renault is not keen at all on the perspective of providing a fourth team, so there is a scheme centered on Toro Rosso, which would see Honda buying Toro Rosso, finding there a chassis for its engine, and the contract for the Renault engine transferred to McLaren.
Then: “Voilà”, everybody is happy; well, except perhaps Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz Jr, but that’s life, boys, sorry…
Then again, according to Joe Saward’s blog (see this for more info on the matter) Ferrari could be also thinking about buying Toro Rosso to revive Alfa Romeo…

I can't see how McLaren can be happy with this. In fact they went backwards. They use to get the Mercedes engine and now they get Renault after 3 years of failure. And, they are back paying for engines and drivers again. NOW they have to perform with no excuses.

But look at Max and RB this year... great chassis and no results because of Renault.

I do believe Ferrari wants a second team to develop drivers but its more likely to be Sauber.

Oh, I do agree...I found this paper from BBC's Andrew Benson on the McLaren-Honda situation quite comprehensive:

Fernando Alonso: What are the problems facing the double world champion? - BBC Sport

I'm also not sure that going to Williams would be an improvment of any sort for Fernando....

He hasn't complained about McLaren. Quite the opposite.

Jenson's not on the bench. He ruled himself out of F1 for good at Monaco. He's done.

You're working under the misguided notion that Alonso has slammed McLaren or has slammed Honda against McLaren's wishes. Anyone who's paid even casual attention to this story knows neither of those things is remotely true.

I believe they've already made their decision to drop Honda and go with either Merc or Renault. Merc, if what I hear is true. From what I read they can cut ties with Honda and not pay much of a penalty, but if they can get Honda to quit, then Honda has to pay them. I think that's what they're up to.
