I think Phillip (the author of the story) was mixing up his stats between the 959 and 288 GTO Evoluzione. Although, Phillip was somewhat prophetic in this piece; change his given name of "LeMans" to F40 and double his estimated price and he was almost spot-on.
In Cavallino magazine's issue number 30 (1986) there are details of some parts of the 288 GTO are designed to accept 4 wheel drive, the front hubs for example, as pointed out to the author of the piece by the Ferrari concessionaire. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here is what issue number 30 looks like for purposes of research, if anyone is interested, I belive it's available on EBay. Image Unavailable, Please Login
From my own archives a decade ago, here are a few low-res pics of excerpts of the innards of Cavalino magazine issue number 30, showing the pages dedicated to the 288 GTO and the aforementioned illustrations on page 27. In the same magazine there is a lovely pic of Ed Regner exercising his GTO. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow, that's very interesting...I didn't know that. Although, it certainly makes sense. I've often wondered how the GTO was expected to compete against its AWD competitors in Group B. Group B was a little before my time but I guess I always thought there were RWD and AWD classes that would have allowed the GTO to be competitive.
I agree. Of course, there have been great Ferrari designs since the 288 GTO but none of these newer designs have surpassed the brilliant design of the 288 GTO IMHO.
Agreed. At least it shows intent. I think it's understated seminal beauty is peerless. Chassis number please?
...for those of you that have been patiently waiting....I just posted my 288 GTO in classifieds. Thank you to all who assisted with valuable information and assistance in preparation. Carlo
You'd do yourself a huge favor by complimenting your posting both there and here with some nice images, and, you may wish to let me know the details directly, I do specialize in placing these via Private Treaty, and, by way of example have found new homes for six (6) GTOs this year so far. Thank you Marcel.
Saw a GTO recently in storage , vin was circa 55200 or so fun fact is that out of 272 known cars, a good percent have changed hands at one store on the east coast. Apparently a few dozen of them. Great guys at this place, true gents and a very legit consignment operation. www.copleymotorcars.com
