Hi hi, Now that Irma has passed by Tallahassee and left my 308 intact, it's time to get back to the resto-maintenance. The "paint" finish on my side mirrors is cracking/flaking off. I know these mirrors are nearly impossible to replace, so I'm hoping there's a way to somehow remove the old finish and reapply something new. I don't care if it's official 1985 Factory Plastic Paint - just something that looks black, smooth and nice. I've considered just sanding it all off and grabbing a spray can, but wanted to double-check here with the knowledge bank first. Has anyone refinished these, and know the best way to proceed?
I am away from home at the moment so I can't go out to the garage and look at my car but I believe they were molded in black plastic and never painted? If yours have been painted and are flaking, the best thing to do is to completely remove the finish, after which, use a red scotch bright pad or possibly 400 grit sand paper and scuff the entire surface. Wash with soap and water and then two thin coats of plastic adhesion promoter or before you topcoat. Some plastic pieces can be a real pita to get paint to stick. Mainly due to the injection mold process.
Thanks guys. Looking closely at it, I'm wondering if the paint is on top of the original (intended appearance) molding. Hard to tell at this point. Looks a bit grey... maybe faded. Perhaps it was painted as a result. Guess I'll find out once I get a good patch of it removed.
Took a deep breath, and grabbed the sandpaper. Interesting that the driver's side was painted red at some point, but the passenger was not. I'll get them repainted once I figure out a good place to spray them. You'd think I would have determined that before all this, but ... nah. Image Unavailable, Please Login
