Traditional debate between the purists and others. I thought it was mainly seen in competition cars (some are (too) heavily transformed, not mentioning of course the numerous continuations or reps), see it happens in concours field as well.

Still much prefer cars that have kept as much patina as possible and are driven regularly.

Goodwood Revival always sees a few big Ferraris on its pre-66 parking that are just great vintage cars being driven, such as Daytonas, Lussos, 275 GTBs or even 2231GT...

How about cars that have been modified in period by owners to suit them personally? What is Peter Sellers modified his to suit a whim? Or a famous race driver had a modification done for them? I should think it a bad thing to change that as that would be part of an interesting history. Also, these are after all only cars, and to get so upset over it is silly. As tongascrew says, just one man's opinion. And that is the gist of it.

Some of this depends on the car, the owner/history, the specific period mods that were done, and to what extent is any deviation from as it was originally built. A "Peter Sellers" or Bill Harrah or Agnelli personally owned and professionally modified car vs. 'Joe Schmoe' owned, all done in period (when the cars were new) would most likely have differing higher values and historical importance than 'Schmoe's' car. I agree that certain types of in period personialized modifications are and sometimes can be very interesting parts of a cars history, and some should be kept that way.....However.... a significant one-off such as 0402AM with the obvious wrong nose is simply wrong NO matter what, and impossible to really justify or excuse. A car like this should be correctly restored to the way it was originally built, which is what has been proclaimed to have been done.....but it missed the mark as mentioned.

    Thanks Boudewijn and Christian.

Yes Christian, I've tried colours but I prefer graphite pencils easier to use with blotting paper and eraser...

    Hi,

Yes, very cool photo, even if it's not a Ferrari.

Just out of curiosity, was it owned by RL already back then? I think not, but that photo has been signed by RL.
I love shots like that with kids, it's amazin to see them grow up and gives syrong memories.
Do I see right and the RH rear tire is flat? Just out of storage? 1964 barn find? And then tucked away again for some time...
I have seen that car and Ralph Lauren, but not at the same time. It was really nice to hear that he was really a car guy and not just buying them as investments, very interested in the engineering and design. Amazing cars...

    Cheers,

    Pekka T.

My guess is this would be Michigan in the 1960s or 1970s, and that Ray Jones was owner at the time. That may be Greg on the left.
The story told about Ralph is that in the early days he repped ties from his (1969?) Morgan. He also was said to have bought a 1979 930 Turbo new. The collection really started in the mid-80s from what I was told. Stan Nowak was hired to purchase all the Ferraris. He may have bought the other cars as well.

Yes, Ralph started with ties, as many know, he changed his last name to Lauren. I always found it amusing that his brother Jerry also changed his last name to Lauren. That said..... when he bought the Mercedes-Benz SSK, "Count Trossi" car, it was owned/sold to Ralph from Thomas Perkins, along with the Bugatti Atlantic.

I think his first 8C 2900 came from the same source and I am not sure about the Blower Bentley as well...

    I think that's right- the Touring-bodied spyder.
And then the Mille Miglia Spyder came, of course, from Bill Serri.

Yes, and I think Perkins owned the Birkin Blower as well? 412019 was certainly owned by Perkins at a time, I think it was a package deal with the Atlantic and maybe even more cars
