I drove the 720 this afternoon. Very nice car. Very fast. I prefer my 488 however.

Not intended to entice an argument- just my personal opinion. You can't go wrong with either car but for me, 488 is a better fit.

I am sorry but you are dead wrong. The 488 is a direct rival of the Super Series Maccas. It was quicker than the 650, but now the new 720 is even quicker. Nothing to be embarrassed about, it's a newer car after all. The 570 is both slower and cheaper than the 488.

Wait till the 488 GTO comes it's over 700hp plus KERS. and alot lighter will kill the 720

And wait 'til the 770LT comes...it'll probably demolish the 488 GTO. Here's hoping that Ferrari get the 488 GTO back into the supercar game and not have to play catch up.

What line of argument is this? The newest car will almost certainly beat the older ones. Nothing weird about that and Ferrari is certainly not behind anyone else.

Seriously- totally agree. This back and forth is so idiotic. I spent a good amount of time yesterday driving the 720. Having gone in reading the rave reviews about it my expectations were high. And my expectations were not disappointed. Its a fantastic car. Anyone that says that any of these cars are junk - is a moron. Sorry- 720 is great. 488 is great.

Having said that- the 720 lived up to all the hype of being fast. It is super fast. Its super quick. Its a nice car, comfortable- easy to get in and out of. However, after an extensive test drive- I prefer my 488. I had been considering buying a 720 either as an addition or trading in the 488. Likely I may still add one in the future- but in no uncertain terms will I be trading in the 488.

To me, there was a bit of turbo lag- ever so slight but I felt it, whereas the 488 is more linear power.
Anyone buying a 720- please get the upgraded exhaust. I usually ignore all the threads and posts about sound but the 720 in stock exhaust was pretty bad.
The fit and finish of the 720 I drove was good but there were some gaps in the carbon. minor stuff- likely cause its a launch edition car but there were a few issues with the particular car I saw.

None of this means that the 720 sucks or its horrible or anything like that. I just preferred the Ferrari as to me the driving experience was better. If I owned a 720 Id be one lucky guy and no doubt would enjoy it thoroughly.

At the end of the day- test drive these cars, and buy the one that floats your own boat. If you have the means, buy them both! but stop the childish back and forth of how now 350k car is better than the other.

the debate is biblical...it'll never end.

i just watched some video where a 488 beats the 570 by a car length in the quarter mile, any validity to that?

Im not quite sure what point you are trying to make. I wasnt referring to any video. I was sharing my insight having driven both cars - the 720 and the 488 back to back.

Both great cars as we would all conclude.

You just got your 488? How many miles have you put on it? What type of driving have you done with it? Day to day mundane tasks, canyon carving, airstrip attack, tracking?, etc. How many miles did you drive the 720s and how did you use it?

Reason I'm asking all this is that if one wants to really experience a car and it's capabilities and see the differences and report back to others then one should spend some significant time with the car.

Frefan put in 2,000 miles on a 720s and I believe Marknc also put in around 2,000 miles. I've put on about 600 miles which consists of some canyon carving, straight line pulls and track driving. I did about 30 miles in a 488 but I would hesitate on making any type of conclusion on a 488 based on 30 miles.

I've driven my gt3rs for about 2,000 miles and still can't determine whether I like the car or not. I've changed my mind four times now.

So let me get this straight, I'm only allowed to comment and share my viewpoint if I've put 2000 miles on a car?

    Understood. Thanks.

I'm sure all dealers are now revamping their sales strategy to ensure that buyers of Ferraris, Mclaren's, porsches are given a mandatory 2000 mile test drive before they sign on the dotted line.

Your post is so defensive and yet I said nothing bad about the 720. In fact called the car fast as hell and fantastic. Yet, my credentials for posting my review are questioned.

    I love the internet.

The 720S is a great car.

If you want spend over $300K for a car with an engine designed by Nissan 20 years ago and built by a third party supplier, it is a good choice.

Why have you only driven your 488 30 miles? Is there an issue?

I don't have a 488. I have a few friends (actually many) who have one. I just happened to swap my 720s with my friends 488 during monterey car week. A fine car.
Of all the people I know who have one there was really only one person who wasn't impressed with it (he went from a 458 to 488 and he has a few mclarens). He swapped out his 488 for a speciale.

I personally think having an N.A. car along with a faster turbo car is a good compliment to each other. I just choose to have the Mclaren as the turbo one. (i've driven about 8k miles in the speciale and it would be very difficult for me to give it up). It's my favorite ferrari that I've owned (I'm comparing to a scud, f12 and a 458).

Clearly, no dealer is going to permit a 2000 mile test drive. As a good client, some will allow you to have a demo car for a weekend but that is hardly the norm. By test driving a car for an hour or two, it can be ascertained whether it is special or not. Sometimes a 15 minute drive will reveal that the car is simply not to ones liking. But I do agree that to get the full measure of a car, and really determine if this car will be ultimately satisfying over the long run, does require a sufficient amount of time behind the wheel.

It seems from your postings that you are new to the exotic car experience.

Most people who play in the new car space have never driven the car they signed on the dotted line for. Probably the last car I drove before I bought was a 911.

I could care less of whether someone says good or bad things about mclaren or ferrari. I'm not a surrogate of either brand and not trying to convince anyone of anything.

However, I do believe that when one wants to give an opinion it should be proportionate to their actual experience with whatever they are opining on.

Thats precisely the point I was trying to make. Most exotics are bought untested and many unseen in the sense that you find an out of state dealer and find a car that suits your requirements- color, miles spec etc. Yet I actually drove a 720- no not 2000 miles but a good test drive- gave my thoughts on the subject and was summarily dismissed by you for not having enough experience. And yet you claim you dont care whether someone says good or bad things about ferrari or mclaren. You will excuse me but your posts have a mclaren bent to them so I find the previous statement amusing.

So you can dismiss my opinion for lack of actual experience even though I called the 720 a great amazing fast car. I guess I need to drive it more to truly appreciate how great it is when Ive already said its great.

I really don't think you need that much time to figure out if you like a car or not. Ever meet someone who you know you just don't like within minutes of meeting them and hearing them talk? Well, human beings are infinitely more complex and deep than exotic cars, so I'm pretty sure we can figure out the appeal of some loud-noise-making metal and plastic.
