The former FIA official Budkowski was hired by Renault. This is a great shock for the top teams as he was the one who had full access to their plans of the 2018 cars and now works for the competition.

Expect the Renault to improve quite a bit for next year.

I'm sure a man of his caliber can find work elsewhere OTHER THAN the current teams on the grid.....for the time being.

There needs to be a clause where he takes 2 yrs off away from F1.....then he can come work for F1.

    Something smells like "pomme frites.":D

So... without him breaching IP protections, and given the engine formula gets ripped up soon, why is this a dangerous move?

Well, hello! He was the one who had to review all the plans for the new cars in his role as FIA official. Now he knows all the details of all the new cars coming out, including even their results from the wind tunnel testing. Renault can compare and decide which ones they like and want to implement. If nothing else he can steer Renault away from a bad idea: "Nah, I wouldn't do that. Trust me on this one..."

So no, I don't believe we can simply assume "IP protections won't be breached".

The engine is the same for the next 3 years. And this is more concerning for aero concepts than anything else

No, the top 3 teams are the big losers and understandably upset. Renault is the winner.

So when Renault appear with a 2018 car which looks just like an RB, will the law suits fly?

Latest news is that Renault proposes to double the notice period (from 3 months to 6 months), leading to an official start with them in April.
That the FIA does not have a clause for more than 3 months is crazy (although it might just be Swiss legal conditions).

Sounds like things for any team running a Renault power unit are going to be very interesting and very hotly contested. Mercedes engines only power one top level team, and that is of course the works team. No other podium capable team nor heavily funded team has a Merc engine. This is interesting as Renault will have at least 3 good motivated and funded teams which will be highly competitive: RB, Renault works, McLaren. Do not be surprised if Renault power units are the most developed unit at the end of this engine formula. Mercedes doesn't have the well-funded customer teams Renault has, which I believe at first was on purpose but that may just be their downfall.

If the teams were allowed to go about making fast cars without having the FIA check their plans, this would not be an issue.

I'm not sure how this is even permitted. Just 3 months gardening leave? Complete BS, IMHO.

You can't deny the man his right to make a living. It's not like he can go to work for the other governing body of motorsport since the FIA has a monopoly. But, they should be able to find a way to protect the teams' intellectual property, as difficult as that may be. If innovations that he was privy to appear on Renault's car somebody should be in trouble.

I respectfully disagree. If it were up to me, I would have drawn in his contract, that he's not allowed to work for any teams, should he decide to resign.

They could do that, of course, but that restriction should be accompanied by a massive indemnity to compensate the loss of earning.

IMO, after a couple of years, if that, most of the information he may have retained would be more or less out of date anyway; technology moves that fast.
