I would happily award the title of drag racing champion to the 720S; anyone who looks after a drag racing champion should seriously consider one.
But those who are not obsessed with drag racing could make a different choice, I guess (even though some would consider that a forbidden nonsense).

    My comment has nothing to do with the relative merits of either car on track;

I live in an area with a lot of exotic cars. Many of the owners who actually track (which is very little relative to the number of exotic cars) do not track ferrari street cars. The odd person will show up to a track driving program and maybe try out a track day or two and then are done with the tracking experience.

You'll hardly see any ferrari street car be tracked consistently by its owners and if the owner has multiple cars, the ferrari isn't the first choice. Porsche by far and then mclarens are generally the track choice of multiple exotic car owners.

I was tracking with my friend who has a 488 and he's tried it a couple of times and now gets his performante. Now, performante is his choice for track.

I think there is quite a clear answer to this (apologies if this is a trick question that does not need an answer because it is obvious).

McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes have dominated the last 20 years of F1. On every occasion a team has won, they have had a competitive engine. It is the platform from which a quick car can be developed. Conversely, when the engine has been significantly off-the-pace teams struggle massively. Renault since 2013/14, Honda since they returned.

Ferrari is one of only two teams that race their own engines, this being a basic requisite for the red cars since Enzo started everything 70 years ago. It is the soul of Ferrari and they would never do F1 without it.

I believe road engineers and F1 engineers swap often in each of the companies - McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes. At the very least, learning and technology from F1 competition often informs developments for roadcars. I’m not saying you get F1 tech on road cars, merely that principles and experience from the track can be used to innovate for the road.

A key reason that Ferrari is again doing well in F1 is their engine. The key reason McLaren is doing so badly is their engine. Ferrari road cars have Ferrari developed and built engines, aero and chassis. This approach came from F1 and marks Ferrari out as different to McLaren. Many who enjoy Ferrari quote that power is one thing, but the way power is created and delivered is important too. Ferrari’s determination to engineer the whole car has benefits to both F1 and their road cars. It is their philosophy, and I think it is a good one. Doesn’t invalidate other approaches, it’s just something to like about Ferrari - and I think they benefit from it. You have to admit, if McLaren announced they were to build their own engine programme, you would enjoy that announcement no? I suspect anyone who loves McLaren, heck, cars full stop, would love it.

I don't see a need to prove either car being better than the other
They're both amazingly engineered for great performance. Folks
that are able to afford either or both are truly lucky.

If I could have only one, it would depend on what one of my homes I was spending the majority of my time. 720S in Pittsburgh (northeast) because of the compliant suspension and refinement.

Performante in Scottsdale. I’d have comfort seats in my performante only though.

Our track days see more Ferraris than other cars. Granted, it's a Ferrari based club, bit still Ferraris run their arse off! Lambos, GTRs, Porsches etc, they all do run hard!

BTW, I was mightily impressed by the Performante this weekend! It was trading fastest laps against a Trofeo R shod Speciale, wearing Cup 2s itself!

It's probably a lot more than a 50hp difference between the 720 and the 488. There's been dyno tests done which shows the 720s at 690-700hp+ at the wheels, and seeing how it does the 1/4mile in the 9's it makes complete sense. Mclaren are seriously understating the real power figure just like they are doing with the 570s as well.

MyToys - thanks for posting and that's quite an impressive collection congrats on your successes/accomplishments. By any chance seeing that you've got such a collection and could possibly provide us with your own comparison what are your thoughts on the 720s in terms of QC, "feel", visceral affect, driveability, comfort, things you like/would change, options you feel are important, etc?

Perhaps now some here will begin to realize why it is some don't rack up miles on their F cars...

I’ve only put about 30 miles on the 720 so far and it is an impressive car. I normally don’t drive my sports cars to work but I couldn’t resist taking the 720 this morning. It’s much faster than anything in my garage, including the Speciale, RS and 488 I had and noticeably quicker than the 675LT. (I won’t compare it to the V12s because they are just different animals).

In sports mode (handling/powertrain) the car is very comfortable and rides very smoothly. It feels much more like a 675LT when in track mode, everything is tighter though not harsh. If you had to drive it everyday, it can certainly serve you as your daily.

Looks and options are very subjective. I personally like the looks from the side and back and am still getting used to the “insect eyes” frontal look.

Overall it’s a great improvement over the MP/650/675 in terms of tech and quality.

Great write up Mytoys ... I saw a 720s on the road it just looked incredible and when it was stoped just mouth watering... the biggest drawback for me as far as styling has to be the steering wheel... it has always looked funky to me in all the mclarens except of course for the F1 :)

McLaren steering wheels are by a wide margin, the ugliest, cheapest looking on any super car. Honda Civics are better looking. For me, the steering wheel feel and aesthetics are possibly the most significant interior element since it is the only part that the driver is in constant contact with.
