But to be fair: Kimi did not even know where Max was coming from. That is the reason why he was surprised, I guess he would have asked for a penalty if he saw it later on TV...
The overtaking was great but against the rules...The way Max smiled when they took him out of the room before the podium he exactly knew what he got the penalty for...

PS: Verstappen does not do himself a favour if he tells the media that there is "one steward" that is against him and gives him penalties all the time. I doubt you should make enemies with the stewards

And the penalty was actually nothing else than giving back the position he gained leaving the track, so not really a harsh penalty

I guess. Don't think Kimi would've asked for a penalty post race (not in his nature), he probably would've brought it up at drivers briefing in Mexico however.

It was very 50/50 this, but just reiterates my point that we need bloody gravel traps even just a strip. It'll be guaranteed slower and no stupid steward penalties, whether they're right or wrong.

Max is livid with one steward in particular....Garry Connely. The same imbecile that tried to get Mercedes to protest last year in Suzuka despite other Stewards disagreeing with him (he should've been sacked there and then), the same imbecile that didn't penalize Hamilton identical track excursion as Verstappen but did give Verstappen a hefty penalty...Rumours are that Garry strongly dislikes Verstappen and is extra harsh on his penalties.

I f*****g hate track limits, either enforce everywhere, or don’t enforce anywhere. That’s why I like old school American tracks..

Brilliant drive from @Max33Verstappen - such a shame to be penalised for that. So many people off track all the time. Makes no sense!

After watching videos could equally argue Kimi forced him there. Best overtake of #USGP. Feel sorry for @Max33Verstappen you got robbed @F1

So true! But what about this overtake from Sainz. No penalty given

    And so on.

My point remains that I want gravel strips either side of the track.

Best race of the year somewhat ruined by stewards wanting to be important.

Have to say watching it on TV is much better than in person.

Max could well pass Schumacher's WDC championship totals given the right machinery (and really isn't that the key; guessing the right constructor ?).

Get Stroll off the grid he is wasting space.

He might have the abilities but this is a very long way...if the Mercedes dominance stays for the next 2-3 years his youth advantage might be already gone before he wins his first

Whilst other drivers did run off track during the race, as rightly pointed out by Christian "Boo hoo it's not fair" Horner, they were deemed to be costing themselves time and putting dirt/debris on their tyres, and therefore not gaining an advantage.

In the case of Max "Cut the corner" Verstappen, there are two issues:

    1) He was only able to complete the overtake on Kimi by running off the track and short cutting the corner. Had he followed Kimi around the corner then it highly likely he would not have been able to get past.

    2) He failed to negotiate turn 17 of the track - pretty much missing it out completely by cutting inside the apex with all four wheels.

Now number two is pretty much the same thing that cost Ayrton Senna the WDC at Suzuka in 1989 when he got push started and cut through the chicane, having run into the side of Prost.

What he was found guilty of, was failing to complete the circuit by missing a corner out. Technically, by having all four wheels off the track and cutting inside the corner, Max is guilty of the same offence.

Personally speaking, I think drivers should be forced to drive within the white lines at the edge of the track, and not be allowed to have any wheels over the white lines anywhere. These are supposed to be the best drivers in the World, so they should really be capable of driving between two white lines.

The problem is, you give these drivers an inch and they just start to take the p:censored:ss, cutting corners left, right and centre, and running off track to carry more speed down the next straight or into the next corner.

Christian Horner doesn't like today's penalty?
Max Verstappen doesn't like today's penalty?
Niki Lauda doesn't like today's penalty?

Tough! - Overtaking should be done on track, and not by driving off the circuit and cutting the corner out!

Truly only enforcable by 2 ways: Plant a wall or 1.5 meters or so of dug in gravel trap.

no one likes meddling from some men sitting in an office and making a decision based on...well their opinion. A gravel trap or wall makes them unnecessary and pretty clear cut. When the same stewards decide not to penalize an identical move to Verstappens' a few laps earlier...well, Verstappens penalty goes out the window too, no?

You can bet your sweet bippy Max had the chance to take Bottas's seat.
    IMO he should have.
And my ancestry is Finnish. I hope he is not chasing $$$ or promises.

Max is younger now that when MS got his first ride.

The same was said for Vettel after he won #3 or 4. If he sat in that Mercedes he'd probably have #8 in his pocket by now, but it's pretty hard to jump into the very best car once the season is underway:D

Max took a short cut. Correctly penalised, but agree penalties are not consistent. But this occasion was more significant.

How long as Mercedes had this streak? Whatever it is, that's long enough.

I don't say the team is a disaster. I have proof. Just look at this season since Baku. There was a time when Vettel was 21 points AHEAD. Now he's going to lose with several races left in the season.

What should be done? Ferrari needs to get it's act together. Its their job to do it, not mine. Find the problems and fix them. That's what all good sports teams do. It's not like they are lacking the money!

Or do what was done: The stewards decide a penalty if the rules are broken. Astroturf or other surfaces could just lead to accidents. Rules are rules and Max went OUT OF THE RACING LINE to gain an advantage on Kimi and over take him because of it.

That's pretty simple. And if Kimi did it to Max I would say the same thing.
