I actually was looking forward to doing my own major. I've worked on all different kinds of cars and planes for years, so when my car hit 5 years it didn't take long to put it on the lift. In hindsight, I would have been nice to wait 2 months to finish out 2017 so there would be a "last major 2018", but then again, i have no plans on selling it anytime soon.
I spoke to two local shops here that work on Ferraris and both indicated to me they were, "swap the belts and done" jobs. I really wanted to do it right and have the cams Image Unavailable, Please Login , so that just turned into more affirmation on my decision to do it myself. Plus I personally believe the buttress cracks are caused my mechanics leaning on the quarter panels.
First I want to thank the users here on Ferrari chat for all the great post here with instructions and write ups that took most of the guess work out of this.

    And its out!
All in all, it took about 7 hours to get the motor out,
90% of the work took 3 hours, one particular fitting (the power steering) took over an hour itself.
The other 3 hours were spent looking for tools and taking pictures

    0.5 degrees advance:
Close as i could get it on this bank.
    Bank 1 intake: 0*
    Bank 1 exhaust 0*
    Bank 2 intake 0*
    Bank 2 exhaust .5* early
I used all three methods, Ferrari, Lobe centerline, and 20 tho lift, but preferred the ferrari method and used the others as a backup.
Also the Ferrari method was the easiest and most consistent by far, followed by the lobe centerline. I always found these numbers to be within a degree or less.

I found it interesting that according to several post here from prominent members claim Ferrari TDC is based on when the piston first reaches its highest point of travel. I found a very clear 3 degrees of piston dwell, meaning true TDC and ferrari TDC are 1 degree different.
I based all my numbers on Ferrari definition of TDC. Using True TDC all those numbers are 1 degree avanced

This is great. I actually look forward to doing an Engine Out, but have some time. I have a 4 post lift and seen multiple posts for the engine out on a 4 post, but want to get a 2 post soon. How do most of the Ferrari shatters deal with the AC gas recovery. Would like to hear?

    Boaf!

I seen many of cars ruined by red paint in the engine bay. I think there is a fine line between hideous and great. I chose to mimic the look ferrari has used in virtually every model except the 355, and paint just the plenums wrinkle red. Im very pleased!

I also rewarded the car with a new carbon fiber splitter from M-tecnologia. Matches the spoiler!

It's been proven to my by Ferraridriver (Dave) in the 550 section that you can get much closer that .5 degrees as the cam pully / cam make a vernier scale.

Interesting you measured 3 degrees of dwell - I've measured 1 on my 95 motor. In your example, you would be 1.5 degrees from the universal understanding of TDC and it's the mid point of the dwell.

Regarding the buttress cracks - I don't think for a second it has anything to do with anyone leaning on the car. More likely the load as the car is lifted or even movement on the road.

Regardless - strong work and thanks for sharing. Nothing more rewarding than doing your own work ;)

Also, just curious how many miles elapsed since the last major? And what was the condition of the belts and tensioners?

Nicely done ... too much red for me but hey, it's your car. I like the splitter though. I would scratch the hell out of that one on my driveway.

Looks great! Very nice work :)

The splitter/spoiler and Hamann's really go well together.

Looking back at the invoices on my car I have another year to go to hit the 5 year mark. Trying to decide if I'm going to do it this winter or wait another year.

Agreed with Dave on the buttress cracks. If it was just the sheetmetal and the tech was 300lbs, maybe. With a square tube structure supporting it I just can't imagine someone leaning on it imparting any kind of bending/twisting force in comparison to the stresses endured on the road or track.

Did you check the cam timing as it was when you pulled it out (maybe you said so and I missed it). Just wondering how much it was off and if you can feel a difference by correcting it.

So, seeing as how the belts and bearings seemed new after 5 years, you're still going to redo them in another 5?

My 5.2 car had issues with surging in crosswinds when I had the intake hoses connected to the 1/4 windows. Will be interesting to hear if yours is ok or not.

Really? I thought this was the way that challenge cars and the 348 are hooked up, is it not? Did they have issues with surging?
I did it so it's completely reversible, so if I do I'll just change it back
