Okay, so I just got back from Ferrari of San Antonio, and there are many minor issues that add up to a pretty big repair project. In fact, it's more like a mini restoration.

    01] Engine Out To:
    02] Replace motor/transmission mounts
    03] New belts and hoses
    04] New seals
05] New head gaskets (One is obviously going bad)
    06] New clutch (Toast)
07] New fuel pumps (One old style + One new style= Replace both)
08] Replace Capristo exhaust - which gets so hot it melts wire covers - with CS exhaust with active valves

    Misc:
    09] Shim/rehang doors
10] Repair corroded driver's door latch cable
11] Passenger door needs an entirely new lock mechanism (Tech got locked in! lol)
12] New belly pan (You can see the broken one in the foreground)
13] New footwell cover (Broken one on top of the belly pan)
14] Remove aftermarket speakers behind seats
    15] Remove aftermarket radio
    16] Remove aftermarket backup camera

Basically, remove 17 years of aftermarket stuff.

    17] New battery
    18] New tires

Suspension saved for later (New front rotors within a couple of years, and bushings &c)

This is how you get ahead of all the gremlins.

The usual premium for a stick/sunroof car and 25K miles.

It's a super rare 360, and I knew what I was in for. I did the same with my 456M. Plus, more Ferrari owners should take this approach. You end up with a perfectly sorted car that you're 100% confident with.

In the old days we called it preventative maintenance. Too many owners nickel and dime things, and this is what you end up with.

Oh! You have -the- yellow stick/sunroof 360. That's pretty much a unicorn combination right there.

There are 22 sunroof 360's, and "about half" are manuals. Two are yellow, but the other has shields and a black interior. It is almost how I would have ordered it new, which is why this is worth it for me.

You’ll end up with a 360 the way you want it to be. That’s worth.... a lot!

The engine doesn't "really" need to come out of the car for all this but if you are convinced to take it out and are going that deep in there I would consider what else you may want to do. The forward and outboard heat shields between the tanks and engines seem to be made of an inferior galv plating that want to corrode. If it were me I would replace them. I think they are very simple shapes, maybe you can get some made from aluminum heat shield that will look good forever. You may want to consider replacing all the fuel lines between the tanks too. This would be easy to do when you are that deep, also the cooling lines that run to the radiators up front? I didn't see if you were replacing the oil pre-heater thingy that can fail but you should hit that too IMO. Maybe a couple grand more to do all this while you are in there with the engine out.

I expect many other things will come to light with the engine and transmission out. They will be addressed. Jim is a brilliant mechanic - I've been working with him for over half a decade - and I trust his judgement.

hmm, i feel like the only work that needed the engine to be pulled is the head gasket, but are they sure it's not the heat exchanger that's going bad?

Heat exchanger went bad before and was replaced. Might replace it again while we're in there.

How do you replace the main seal without taking the engine out? I'm new to 360's.

same way with any other car, when you replace the clutch, you remove the flywheel to either resurface or replace. Rear main seal would be behind that on the engine. All that needs to come out to replace the rear main seal is the transaxle, but since you're replacing your clutch anyways, that would already be off

Thanks very much for that information. I'm still soaking up 360/mid engine info.

Even the front main seal can be done with engine in car - have done it myself on my 360C through the access panel behind the seats. Tight but doable...

Why do they think the head gasket “is going”?

Burning coolant, oil in h2o vice versa, leaking.

Relatively big job, are they sure?

If it’s oil in water, is it residual from prior heat xchanger?

Since the heat exchanger went before, the additional flushes were done. All okay now.

We're sure about the head gaskets.
