Just bought 45105

1984 400i Auto, navy blue, tan interior. Drove it from Chicago to Virginia, then Amtrak Autotrain from Virginia to Orlando Florida, then drove from Orlando to Miami. Total driving part of trip was about 1,000 miles. Honestly, I can't believe this 33 year old car that wasn't driven much (19k miles) didn't break down. V12 is as smooth as can be. Does have a few needs which I will be addressing right away. I'm glad I got to know the car real well as soon as I picked it up. It got a real shake down from this trip.

1. A/C needs fixing
2. Little bit of oil in coolant. Will be changing the o-rings. Thanks for the great thread on this!
3. TRX's are a bit dry.
4. I'll be using the A/C a lot here in Miami, so I'm sure I'll be doing a cooling fan(s) upgrade and fan controller. What is output of the alternators?
5. Dash lights are a bit dim
6. Speedometer and tachometer are intermittent. Anyone know a good re-builder for the gauges?

Hope Ramboy (David) can PM with the history of the car. Any suggestion on necessary maintenance/upgrades? I have a collection of cars, but I love this thing and plan on driving it often.

Thanks, why do you say that? I love the color, and its been repainted but can't find ANY evidence of another color. Love the color, and I am very happy with the car. Flew in, started her up, and drove 1000 miles, without any issues. Really like this car, now just taking care of the little things. This is my 5th Ferrari, and I have a good independent shop close to mre that I have used for years, so I am in good hands, besides being mechanical myself.

I can see myself driving that thing so stylish over the Mc Arthur Cswy on a warm friday evening between the palms, entering South Beach and park outside Prime One Twelve steak house for a V12-like American steak..... I had an intermittent gauge & light problem before I sold our 400i, turned out to be a hairline crack in the [very old] fuse...

This 1984 Ferrari 400i is a European-market example that was imported to the US under previous ownership before being acquired by the seller in 2017. A fuel-injected 4.8-liter DOHC V12 sends power to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The car is finished in blue over beige leather and equipped with 415mm wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, pop-up headlights, dual-zone climate control, and a Pioneer CD stereo. This 400i is offered with an owner’s manual, service records, a tool kit, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.

The Pininfarina-designed body is finished in blue and features pop-up headlights, dual side mirrors, a vented hood, bright window trim, and quadruple exhaust outlets with polished finishers. The Ferrari emblem is missing on the right-side mirror and a dent is visible on the grille.

Silver-finished 415mm metric alloy wheels with curb rash are mounted with 240/55 Michelin TRX tires that show sidewall cracking. A spare is stowed in the trunk. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs, and Superformance suspension bushings are fitted along with Mercedes-Benz self-leveling accumulators.

The four-place cabin features beige leather on the seats and door panels. Appointments include R134a-converted air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, square-weave floor mats, and a Pioneer CD stereo. The air conditioning compressor and dryer were replaced in May 2018.

The three-spoke steering wheel fronts Veglia instrumentation consisting of a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline along with a 180-mph speedometer and gauges for oil pressure and coolant temperature. A quartz clock and auxiliary gauges are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 21k miles, approximately 1,500 of which were added under current ownership. True mileage is unknown.

The 4.8-liter DOHC V12 features Bosch fuel injection as well as an MSD ignition system, 70-amp rebuilt alternators, an aftermarket fuse panel, and Scuderia Rampante fuel tank hoses. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. An engine oil change was performed in September 2023.

An owner’s manual is included in the sale along with service records and a tool kit.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in Indiana and Florida from an initial entry in October 1989, which is followed by a gap in entries until November 2017.

1984 Ferrari 400i VIN ZFFEB06B000045105

I’ve owned several vintage Ferraris over the decades. I purchased this 400i from the owner of a well-established Ferrari shop in Chicago. I flew in and had a beautiful drive home to Coral Gables Florida where the car presently resides. Over my 6 years of ownership, I've done many upgrades along with maintenance. Most of the common issues with these cars have been addressed. Igniter and ignition and coil upgraded to an much more reliable and powerful MSD unit. Upgraded the self leveling accumulators to Mercedes Benz units. Replaced and upgraded the suspension and shock absorber bushings from Superperformance UK. Both alternators rebuilt and upgraded to 70amp by Centerline Alternators. Optima yellow top battery. Upgraded high amp fuse board. Fuel tank hoses upgraded to red Scuderia Rampante hoses. Oil filter oil pipe O-rings changed. AC compressor, dryer and expansion valve have been replaced. CocoMat floor mats front and rear. Pioneer Bluetooth stereo with 4 new speakers. Jack kit and manual included in sale. Oil and filter changed 09/01/2023.

Good day Dave,

Indeed... the market is odd and fickle too... and not just on the 400 series, as the same oddities are occurring with Boxers. That said, I think the high $ price paid were 5-speed cars and so they command a premium. Even so, prices are somewhat stale... but it is a quiet time of year given the holidays and that it is mid Winter. Adding to this is the general unease with the geopolitical events along with higher interest rates. All in all various elements that do not promote or encourage spending on "toys".
