I see there being a huge decrease in need for auto mechanics in 20-30 years.

Body shop guys should still do well though.

What are stats on mechanics these days? Is the field decreasing in numbers in 1st world countries where full electric and hybrid is more common?

The BLS says there will be growth in the industry for new mechanics over the next decade but after that i think you will start seeing some declines.

They go back get their EE degrees and charge $200/hr to service the cars of the future.

Best Ferrari mechanic I ever met started as an electrician who could really read a schematic. Not a house wiring electrician, a "fix a complex electronic problem" electrician.

Im a tech, and im nervous. Yes i work old and new,and consider myself a dying breed. However i have managed to position myslef into a neish market which will help me.

Yet, im currently looking into electric vehical service and repair. Cars will always need tires, brakes, suspension work etc. The lack of fluid changes, tune-ups etc, will indeed take a big bite out of my butt. No oil leaks/coolant leaks to repair is a big one.

They'll become auto electricians. There will always be something. Possibly not so many but I'm sure there were Farriers fitting shoes that went onto other things.

I would suggest moving into A/C and refrigeration.

The industry will change, but be there. Just look at the last twenty years of change. Mechanics have had to become well versed in networks, Module diagnostics and repair, wiring has become more complex. Engines have become more complex. Transmissions.
There will always be adaptation. Some of the new guys coming out of school are ready, and some aren't. But the job itself is not going to disappear.

The world is changing on a very large scale - many many jobs will have to be retrained especially factory jobs
