EMBLEM OR NOT THAT IS THE QUESTION

Hi all,

I’m restoring my 1988 328 GTS and I’m trying to find out if the Ferrari emblem on the fenders was a factory option. All my research so far suggests that this only became an option with the F355 but would appreciate some feedback. I’m in two minds whether to fit the emblems or not, I like they way they look but I’m restoring the car to the most festidius factory specifications including any possible options.

No 328 ever came with factory fitted SF shields so if you want to restore it to original, ditch the shields. IMHO they look naff in any case.

More isn't always more. If the body lines don't tell you it's an iconic Ferrari, Shields certainly won't help. I personally think they look ok but no, they don't belong on the 328 .

 

I like the look, especially on a black car, but not a factory option.
IIRC, there was a tread where someone modified the fenders to accommodate a factory-like installation. Looked great, but a lot of work.

 

The "Scudetti" are the symbol of the "Scuderia", that is: the race team. They were intended only for cars that should be entered into competition. The 288 GTO had these as standard because of its "supposed" racing vocation (Group B) that never materialised in the end. Some "serie speciale" intended more or less for competiton purposes had them also. "Scudetti" = racing team = cars intended for competition.

On standard road cars, they became available on a serie speciale of the 355 (spider?) at the end of 1998. Before that date, these are not "period correct" on a road car.
(But if you ask me, it's a sin yes, but a minor one...)

I think the Emblem question is quite clear already, given the responses so far which I would agree with. If your going with originality - which radio do you have? would be a more perplexing question!

Very unlikely but perhaps not impossible that a new owner persuaded the factory to provide that option but even if so it would be obvious because the impressions for the shields would be present on the fenders.

 

Correct !! But i'd go with the impossible theory.

 

We know at least one 328 with the recesses for shields hammered in the metal of the fenders, for which the owner claims the recesses for shields were hammered at the factory, on the production line, on special request. (When I say "claims", by this I mean there is actually no reason to doubt him, but there are no factory papers proving this was a special order indeed once and for all)
But if one pushes the "originality" search further, on the racing cars, and this for a very long period, the shields were usually simple decals or adhesives. The enameled shields, when displayed into a recess hammered in the metal, came much later, with the factory option on road cars...

Thank you to all who took the time to reply. I think I’ll go without the emblems. As to what radio I have, some years ago I installed a Phillips navigation radio (works with a CD ROM). It was pretty cool prior to having access to Google Maps.

I understand the 328 did not originally come with a radio but I read somewhere that for some reason Pioneer branded radios seems to be what most people either requested from the factory or installed themselves. I’ll leave it to the panel of expert bloggers to clarify.

It mostly depends on the market version you have and country of delivery. French delivered cars mostly had Pioneers (although from time to time a Blaupunkt was fitted, but it is rare); German delivered cars mostly had Blaupunkts. US cars usually (but not always) Alpine, etc...

I'm pretty certain the OP doesn't: "have to remove them" if he doesn't really want to - It is his car at the end of the day, and not yours.

The badges weren't fitted by the factory? - So what?, neither were Tubi exhausts and Saratoga tops on 308 GTS'.

It never ceases to amaze Me how people get on their high horses about something so insignificant as easily removed badges!

Do you also demand that people remove any Ferrari badges from Dino 206/246/308 GT4's because they weren't fitted by the factory?

Gilles Villeneuve didn't seem to have a problem driving a road Ferrari with Scuderia badges on the wings:

I just forgot to erase the period "you have to remove them" as it had to be placed after "no, it wasn't" and followed by "if you want to have an original car". Then I changed my mind and did a bit of confusion. I didn't want to force anyone to do anything as anyone can do what he wants with his cars, of course.

Easy there...I'm pretty certain that Albert meant no offense to the OP. That said, if I was trying to bring my car to concourse level, Albert is certainly one of the few I would listen to.

 

Fender shields should be a personal choice free of shaming. They allow the owner of any Ferrari to enjoy and participate in the history and racing heritage that is Ferrari. I’m always amazed at the willingness of a few, often with multiple mods - fuse blocks, ignitions, exhausts, euro bumpers, etc to shame those with a readily reversible cosmetic change such as fender shields. The shields from the factory are works of art embodying historic representations from wartime, racing and ancient regional colors. The cloisonne process is a time consuming art that includes enameling, baking, grinding and polishing. The finest reproductions continue this legacy. Clearly I have a dog in this race and I’m not trying to offend, but it is time to stop the shaming!

 

Shields on a 328 from 1986 - 1988 are not factory standard. The factory did actually do some custom fenders in 1989, along with custom dash boards in cream and tan leather. these cars are fairly rare - mostly European & Japan market cars. I don't believe any cars officially imported to the USA had factory shields. Shields became factory standard option on the 355.

I have them on my 328, because I like them. they remind me of a Dino I saw when I was a kit at Watkins Glen with Shield stickers on the side of the car. ... I thought it looked so cool! so I have them today.

 

Agree in theory but I think you are getting a little bit too passionate about what most owners fit to their car as a aftermarket shield- a mass produced vinyl sticker bought on the internet from one of a hundred sellers.

 

As I said above, I think shields look great on a black car. I seriously considered them after seeing them on a black 308.

 

I like shields but only when done properly and recessed into the panel.

 

Well, technically speaking until the more recent 333's & GTLM race cars - all Shields on the Factory F-1 and sports Prototypes were all stickers. so to be historically correct - you would either have the shield painted on your car like in the 30's or use a "factory approved" sticker. I'm not even sure if the 333's had enamel scudettos or not... but I know the 360' - 488' race cars do. the F-1 cars did however always have an enamel nose badge that says Ferrari... we all have those!

 

Probably a piece of cake for someone with your skills!
