Hello - Hopefully someone can help. I need to remove the sprockets from the ends of the cam shafts (cams are out) and Ferrari in their wisdom haven't provided any flats on the cam to hold with a spanner whilst trying to release the sprocket end nut!

Any tips on holding the cam whilst trying to release the nuts?

Key is use an impact wrench. You can almost hold them in your hand. You want NO nicks in the shaft. I use piece of rubber tire to grip shaft in the bench vise and since my rubber tire is tired old and nasty I wrap the shaft in a shop rag too.

Easiest is to do matchbook trick with cams in car and loosen the cogs before you take the cams out. Besides...if you are having trouble figuring out how to get the cogs off do you have a plan for timing your motor, pinning the cogs and then torquing them once you have the cam timing dialed in? If you got no shaft flats you must commit other sins.

That tool does not apply now that the cam is out.
Wrap it in a towel, put in in a vise, and use an impact wrench. It will not take much.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't fancy it in the vice but in the end had my friend grab it in a towel and used a decent impact gun on it :)

Timing has to be completely re-set, twin distributor also so fun times ahead!

For info, you can't lock the cam wheels on this one, as it uses a chain and you have to let the sprockets spin to get the chain through so putting the cams back in wasn't the most straight forward way of doing things.

    Thanks again.

Hi Mike, it would be a coincidence if it would. The cam center to center distance would need to be the same as a 355 and so would the pulleys.

If you played russian roulette for 40 years and got lucky enough to live, would that still make doing so the proper thing to do? ;)

It's not exactly Russian Roulette. You do not torque tight, only enough to hold the cam shaft in place. You get a feel for these things from experience. That is why it is called experience.

In the case, a vise and an impact gun works fine.

Mitch - we will just agree to disagree on proper methods. Yep, I know many techs do this but I won't be one.

Man makes tool when he needs them. Five years from now it will take me longer to remember where I put that tool than to whip out my book of matches. "Proper" is not the path but the results. You need tools great! Tools are a great thing. It is really great when you can sell them to others. You are doing a good job. Keep going.

Carl - we sell very little cam locks. I designed them out of my own need, not to make money on them. Our wheel tools are the highest volume seller. The tools we offer are truly not for money making as they are to help the community. BTW, that photo is courtesy of your fellow stooge, Bruce (plugzit)

And how long does it take to time the cams?

It is not like you just drop them in the journals and are done.

I was only talking about using the tool to break the bolts free - you must have missed the dialog in the thread. ;)
