The thin belts that Maserati used on the Khamsin and Bora can get very noisy when the engine is cold. The noise goes away after a few miles when the belts warm up.

The noise sounds metallic and makes you (and all those around you) think there is something terribly wrong with the engine. I've found that spraying the belts with WD-40 quiets them temporarily but I would like to find a more permanent solution. I may try other lubricates such as Vaseline to see if they last longer. I am not too concern with belt slippage since they are very tight.

Has someone found a solution that does not involve replacing the belts?

Besides replacing then with newer more pliable belts ... it was always though that this situation was exacerbated by a misalignment of the center plane of the pulleys involved. In other words ... if the pulleys are all aligned exactly then the belts won't tend to climb up the face of the pulleys and then snap back.

A product called belt ease can help out but it's only a temporary cure. I made an alignment jig out of bent tubing for my Bora.
