Adrian Newey has turned down Ferrari offers three times . . .

It's amazing how the release of a book brings out these tidbits . . . .

Why would he want to work with Ferrari? He's got it made in England.

Like what he says on 31min 10sec--->about the current PU---> " The truth is, the current regulations are mainly about the power unit......and I think thats a strategic mistake. F1 is at its best when there is different power units around but you can still win even though you have'nt get the best power unit."

Yeah, he has it made in England (family and culture are important). Interesting he turned down that lucrative offer from LdM.

It's amazing that John Barnard was able to convince Ferrari to set-up a design office in the UK.

I believe the office was known as "GTO" which stood for Guildford Technical Office.

 

And no coffee on your desk ..only water ..ohhh lots of fun working for uncle Ron!

He was also offered still in the V8 era. Silly money offer. And refused. Ferrari's management is toxic. They expect miracles immediately, or else start waving the sacking stick. Why leave and make the move to Italy when he can do as he pleases at Red Bull?

 

Does anyone know what happened to GTO, does it still exist?

 

I've been to Guildford, would be cool to check it out if it does exist (which I would doubt)...

 

If an Alan Henry article in "Motorsport Magazine" in 1997 is to be trusted, the offices were actually not in Guildford, but in the nearby village of Shalford, between Guildford and Godalming.
The "GTO" offices was chosen to make a play-on-words on "GTO", but to achieve this pun, they used the biggest town nearby, i.e Guildford, because using Shalford, you would then have had "STO", which does not work (Except in French, and it is not a pleasing memory).
Note that Barnard sold the first Shalford GTO office when he left the Scuderia in 1989 to McLaren (Yes...) then had to open another one (MDD I think?) when he came back at the Scuderia threee years later, exactly in the building next door of the first.
That second one, if my memory serves me well, was financed by Ferrari, had been sold back by them to Barnard (I think) when Barnard left Ferrari for the second time in 1996, then sold again by Barnard later.

Adrian would not have hard free reign, then they would blame everything on him anyway, then of course regret losing him after they fired him (reference Aldo Costa).

I think it was FDD. Ferrari Design Development and he purchased from Ferrari when they moved operations back to Italy and hired Bryne Brawn and Todt instead.
He carried on as a freelance studio called B3 Technical and worked on F1 design for Prost & Arrows, that's until it went bust as a result of bad debts . Barnard designed surgical equipment thereafter.

newey would never work with Ferrari after the Italians tried to scalp him over the Senna enquiry.

 

Wait a second. So you're telling me someone established this rule, and then expected actual productive work to get done?!?

 

And next, to expect said work be done correctly? What's this world coming to...???

 

Ferrari management doesn't look for solutions to problems, they look for alibis for failure. They only win when a strong hand is guiding them...and they are also lucky.

 

very well put. make no mistake, I adore Ferrari and would like nothing more then to come back and be a tifosi like I was in the Brawn/Todt days, but that style of thinking is long gone inside of that team

 

Actually, working and living in Italy could have appeal. On the other hand, working and living with Italians would have it's challenges.

I think we should not forget Luca Di Montezemolo; Todt has said a few times that, by taking almost all the pressure from the press and the media on himself, and playing with it as the consumate professional he is, Luca has allowed Todt to isolate the technicians from outside pressure.
Of course, we all know that the equilibrium somewhat floundered in, or about 2006, when Luca decided to make the team "more italian" again, etc...but Ferrari has had ten glorious years under that dream team. And a dream team, when assembling strong characters, cannot last forever.
Furthermore, those who have been following Formula One for sometime know that this period of strong domination is an abnormality in long term Ferrari history...

(And by the way, I have to say that I am less than favorably impressed by Todt's tenure at the FIA...)

You have simply to have been there a few days to see what Ferrari is for the Italians, and then you understand better the pressure Ferrari is under. There is simply nothing that can compare, it is a national treasure to anyone, and anyone has an opinion on what should, or should not be done; or how it should be done. You have to experience it to actually believe.
(By the way, working with Italians is not that bad; at least, not worse than working with the French...a bit different, but not that much)

Indeed I agree with the Todt statement he seems to have made the series worst with his decisions. Why did Luca want them to make the team made more Italian again? If it didn't work before the success came along it doesn't work in 2006 and after. Plainly it hasn't worked after 2008 when that year they were the very last time very much considered to have the car that other teams have to beat until 2017. After the 2008 and before the recent 2017 bringing Ferrari to be legit challengers for the championship I simply put they couldn't match the early and mid-late 2000s success again after those years until 2017 recent resurgence. Maybe 2010 and 2012; although they don't count in my opinion, since both times the team did make a legitimate in my opinion car that is consider championship contender altough nowhere near as strong as those cars no chance is what I meant.

 

I think the 2013 Ferrari was very, very good, but when Piorelli decidede to chage the tires to help Red Bull, thye Ferrari lost all teh advantage it had....it was unfair as i think they would fight very hard for that championship.
