Dan, not looking to bust your balls here but what makes you think that is supposed to be stainless hardware? What process led to that? Have you looked it up in the period parts book? While I know some inaccuracies exist it is the first place to look. Another resource is to look at another car well judged and known to be correct. Don't just take some parts countermans word for it, do some research.

Stainless hardware is used on the exhaust and some of the exhaust heat shielding only.....not there.

No I fully appreciate you input. I remember you mentioning the stainless hardware at Cavillino. I looked at a few cars over the past year and notice all mixed hardware with nothing consistent. I ended up just looking up the parts and ordering directly from Ferrari, thats what there supplying right now. I don't have an original car to compare against, all mixed from being serviced over the years I'm assuming.

While looking at this I was curios and looked them up in my book and it showed the correct stuff. You need a parts guy that knows what the part numbers were.

You have been at shows where some award winning cars were. Where was your camera? There is a reason I take one with me to shows. When I find a particularly good car or a very untouched original I ask the owner if I can get a bunch of pictures. Never once turned down. There are a lot of great F40's out there. Don't wait for one to drive in the shop

A lot of people can paint a car, small details and the knowledge and ability to get them right is what wins shows. I judged the F40 class at the Ferrari 70th in Maranello last year with Kieth Blumel and we have more, better F40's here than there. Finding a car to use as a guide will not be hard if you look around.

I don't think they are but I know what you talking about they are the metal nylock style with the slit in them. Out of the 15 bolts and nuts I ordered only 1 of them was that original style. Ever
I went off the parts catalog on the stuff I didn't have photos of. I think the only original car I've come across is the 200 mile F40 that goes to all the shows and your right he's very nice about letting me look it over.

12646601 number 38 on the diagram x 4 superseded original NLA to 12646604
    127494 number 39 on the diagram x 4
    15896214 number 37 on the diagram x 4

If you ordered a new F40 motor they won't give you one of those either because they ran out of them long ago. That doesn't mean we think its OK to replace it with a 488 motor.

Those parts, correct ones, are available, just not from Ferrari.

    Good point.

The stainless self locking exhaust nuts I ordered from a motorcycle supplier, I hope there the same. Everyone sells regular coppers for exhaust use.

On the hardware for the waste gate vent I will take closer look at the car this weekend.

If you going to be down for the weekend I get in Thursday if you want to grab lunch or something.

I'll be there from Wednesday on but I am pretty busy. I'll be in or around the Ponce de Leon room for most of the day Thursday. It is private until the judges seminar after 3. I'll be at the track Friday AM but usually need to get back early afternoon. And Saturday I am busy litterally from dawn until the dinner.

If presenting a car at these shows means you have to then pander to someone who communicates in such a condescending manner, just to keep them on side then thank god its not for me. I can see why so many owners avoid such events like the plague.

Eh I'm not one to kiss ass and have rubbed a lot of people wrong myself not having a filter. A few people Pmed me saying the same thing.

Brian's a good dude, he's one of the few guys still around that really knows what the cars were like new, and one of the few guys I will actually take advice from. I honestly looked over 6-7 F40s over the past year - all of which have different variations of hardware that are incorrect, and of course every owner has the "perfect" F40. It doesn't help that Ferrari doesn't provided the original hardware anymore and there's basically nothing accurate to compare against. Let's not forget, we're splitting hairs at this point over hardware in places most people would never look, that's valued at a point at concours.

When I originally started doing concours events it was a big ego thing for the shop and I was humbled quickly. I remember leaving upset and cursing that I would never do something like this again. We had a missing bulb in a tool kit and it was deducted as a missing or incomplete tool kit 3-5 pts. The way the cars are judged it doesn't matter if you show up with the car covered in mud, I've had judges complain the cars are too clean. What they look for is preserving originality, so you dance on the fine line of letting a car age and preserving it from deteriorating from rust etc. What really made the thought process of how the cars are judged was attending Chris Currents concours workshop at the FCA Nationals.

I had a car with the original windshield in great shape but was naturally delaminating from age. We lost a point over it because I figured it was a nice feature of the cars originality. We ended up leaving it alone since the new glass is a different material and we would probably loose points for the new glass, damned if you damned if you don't. In this case wrong is wrong so I will happily accept advice.

The reason I'm being transparent in the thread and leaving it open for comments is to benefit myself and owners. This information's not out there and most people don't know or care to know the small details. Most figure 'well an expert or dealers working on the car and I paid a lot so its correct.' I hope someone finds this information useful in the future and we can get more cars closer to true original. Win or loose the cars always benefit from being judged and the FCA does a good job of scouting out guys that really know their stuff. The worst is a local concours judge that really just doesn't know, and has a big ego making bad calls.

I actually read Brian's response 4 times and I still don't know what the issue is. Yes, he didn't say "I'll meet you by your car with a bouquet of flowers", but he simply explained his schedule and where he will be. He has an official role in the event. He didn't say he refuses to meet him, he basically just said where he will be and that he will pretty busy. In Brian's defense, he has always been helpful to me when I was looking for information that I know I can trust.

Good luck this weekend. I stood and watched your car being judged last year. It's a great car and I hope you take home platinum.
