Yes I do, thank you......which has been shared with me in confidence. Sit with your Ferrari contact and really pump him for some particulars and depending on your relationship he may share some of the pipeline with you. Trust me, there is a fair bit coming across the range.......some more desirable than others.
Not sure how/why mac has got in on VS/GTO's act here but agree 570's face (to put it kindly) is comical and unresolved, much is the case with 720. They both trying to look futuristic in design but got beaten up badly with the ugly stick in the process. Senna even more hideous again. Some one needs the sack for that....actually make it all of them. I just don't think performance matters above the current levels anyway which makes cars like Senna redundant outside of a racetrack. None will age gracefully like any Ferrari IMHO.
When will sports car manufacturers appreciate the incredible premium placed on aesthetics. I am sure 90% of us would buy a car that looked wonderful even if it was somewhat slower. It's just part of the experience, together with the sound and these are both areas of Ferrari strength.
Aesthetics is king. Ferrari 488 has WOW without being ugly from any angle. Some of these others need to focus more on design and less on performance, most of which can't be accessed anyway.
Mac got involved in this thread because I was noting that the 488 VS' design, although moving away from purity of line towards overly complex designs, like Mac and Lambo for example, hopefully will retain a higher level of design and aesthetics than the competitors.
Case in point, the 308 GTB/GTS. They were never the absolute fastest, but became iconic due to their aesthetics.
488 design looks clean, modern and unmistakably Ferrari.....majority appear to concur. Upcoming VS/GTO making a few minor design adjustments to differentiate from the 488GTB without having to take any drastic detour from the car's basic design elements. Mac OTOH, from the feedback I've heard, the greater majority (of the general public) see one and their first impressions are wtf is it? Is it KIT or?? You don't get that with Ferrari. Everyone knows what it is.
This is / has been my biggest concern about losing pininfarina. If you look at the development of the 812 you can see the increased authority engineering has over aesthetic design. The sculpted model wasn't sliced up and wasn't as styled as much as the aero models and final product. I feel the 812 has great bones but arguably perhaps it's aesthetic potential was compromised.
There is no certainty that pinifirina design would have produced a more appealing outcome for the 812. Just look at the FF. The front looks good - shame about the back. The look certainly raises eyebrows. Flavio did a great job on the 488....VS looking good so far as well!
We all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I remember, also Ferrari has launched different cars that were initially described as absolutely terrible and have only been accepted over the years and the habit. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone! On a special track oriented version I can accept a few aerodynamic features which should show that the car is something special, that the "speciality" is visible. But that in the meanwhile also the base models are full of holes, flaps, wings and all that funny aero stuff (e.g. 720S, 812SF) is a little bit strange, this is defintely a somewhat ridiculous development. But the marketing departments are under pressure to find new selling points again and again. Because the cars are maxed out technically and performance wise (power unit) since a few years, now they want to convince us that these aerdynamic miracles actually generate a massive downforce and efficiency and thereby achieve a superior driving behavior. Excuse me, but the few one-tenth of a percent points of additional aerodynamic efficiency are negligible and almost "exclusively for the eye". All street cars represent at the end a big wing profile and suffer from the same problem, all these ugly measures help, relativ considered, not that much. A lot of Tam-Tam for nothing. However, I like the 488 SE...
Agree. This is what I wrote about 812 in that regard: https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/145776151/
I also think they did a good job on the 812. Love its sculptural/more muscular stance...and If I'm in the minority, I don't really care.
I think sometimes we try and overanalyse this. Ferrari don’t really like wings and go to great lengths to avoid them - even the LaF’s rear wing is significantly more restrained than the P1’s. I like this approach and it seems to make sense to my aesthetic eye. Of course, pursuing speed technically is the racing mentality and they are also a racing-heritage brand, in fact you could argue they are THE racing heritage brand. (I’m actually enjoying all the ‘tutt-ing’ I can already hear... So, mixing the two has to be the right way - and seems to be what they are doing today, and have probably done for years. Would the 250 GTO look like it did if today’s aerodynamic technology was known then? However, I have four daughters, all drivers and keen on cars. One of them said to me yesterday while we were driving in my RS “you know, I love cars with wings. They are so strong-looking, powerful”. Now, she is a very stylish and feminine person, yet apparently loves an aggressive look on a car. Go figure. The point is, there is no right and wrong, and your opinion can change (she hated me selling my Aston DBS because the car was ‘so beautifull’). Often people are in love with a previous model or don’t want to like the next model because the world goes crazy for the new one and you have the old. If we are not affected by that and simply think ‘wow, I love it’ when we first see it, or grow to love it over time, then the designer has done well. I loved the 812 straight away, I loved the 488 straight away, I love the 488 GTO. I didn’t like the 720 although my dislike is softening so perhaps I will grow to appreciate it one day. I don’t believe I will ever like the Senna. There are very few Ferraris I don’t like, although there are some I like less - the 550, The Enzo, the 430. Some of the ones I like less have aggressive aero, some don’t. How can we rationalise something so subjective? There is no going back. Aero is here, and sometimes it will connect with us, sometimes it won’t. Sometimes it won’t and then will. We’re humans, we do that!
Ya but it's a Porsche...how can you not love it! My only daughter is much the same. Crazy to say Ferrari is still qualifying in her eyes lol. Mac and Lambo don't even get a look in. Go figure.
A 911 is a women's car. And with an ironing board on the butt all the more, that must please the women!
That's a big call but agree the women do like em....probably the lack of pretentiousness - no need to try hard too hard. GT2RS is not for the weak. Hopefully 488 can level the score or beat it. Mac OTOH could only wish to be a Ferrari or Porsche - or if only just to be identified by the general public for once.
Dry weight is the actual weight of the car (in non running condition obviously) and it's meaningful for comparative purposes. If you start adding different amounts of fluids to each car the comparison gets skewed.
While I would refrain from buying a car I find downright ugly, I don't think that aesthetics is that important. These are cars after all, they are supposed to do the car stuff well, not the art stuff. It's nice if you can combine the two, but if I had to choose one or the other I would choose the better driving car. Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but performance is objectively measured...
Well, it's not just about a few tenths here and there (it is that too of course); it's also about being planted at the speeds that these cars can achieve nowadays. I for one accept the aero appendages as long as that means that the car feels secure at 150 mph, unlike the cars of yore.
Bad looks can only go so far though. Not mentioning any names But Ferrari and Porsche can be excused from the room
four daughters which are keen with cars. you sir. have won the lottery. i have a 2 y/o girl. and she names the RS, Caterham, M3, ACR, etc. she likes the Caterham the most. Kiska (quite a known Austrian design company) explained me multible times - as beeing back in the days a design engineer - that we (normal people) can not tell if this design/machine/car/bike is / will be beautiful in around 1-2 years. so we should not judge. somehow they are correct if we are honest. or compare the feelings of cars we have as soon presented. and as soon 2 years old and looking again closely.
So much McLaren hate. Current McLaren fleet may not be the best looking cars. But hey, at least in a few years, they will be the only real sports car/supercar manufacturer without an SUV in their lineup
